1932-D 25C CLASHED OBV

I was searching a bag of "junk silver" and found a 1932-D Washington Quarter. This coin has 2 lines on the obverse off the front of Washington's face, which I believe to be die-clash marks from the eagles wings on reverse die. I am unable to find any others of this "variety" and was hoping to get some feedback from numismatists with their opinion on this coin. I am happy to provide further photos if needed, thanks!

Interesting. What about behind Washington's head? Nice 32-D in any case!

  • @ Roger B - Thanks for the comment! No lines behind Washington's head... which I thought to be odd as well. I will be taking the coin around to some dealers and getting opinions. Have a great day! -Tyler

Looks like die cracks to me.

I'm thinking it might not be a die clash but rather a die crack (as @grip points out). Here's an overlay that might help

First of all, congratulations! Almost, but not quite, worthy of a YOU SUCK award.

Second, I have looked at a LOT of 1932-D quarters and have never seen one with clashmarks of any sort, and those lines do not look like the clash marks one does see on a Washington quarter. My best guess is that there is some sort of glue or varnish or other coating on the coin that gives it that very faint yellowish color to the right of the lines.

Assuming the clashed dies were not rotated, or off center, here is how they come together.

I don't think the lines in the OP match up well. The curvature of the line at the nose, e.g., is opposite what it should be.

The cap'n may be onto something. I'd give the coin a safe acetone bath and see if it changes anything.

Those are die cracks , not clashes.

The 'lines' certainly appear to be die cracks.... an acetone bath and more magnification should answer the question... Cheers, RickO

As mentioned already, they're not die cracks.

That area from the face to the left is a stain of
some type - not clashed dies.
