Variety attribution incorrect - back to the end of the line? (Finally changed)

I sent in a batch of coins for Variety attribution and TrueViews back in March. Things went along smoothly until one of the coins was attributed incorrectly. I contacted customer service to bring this to their attention and the representative said that it order would have a hold placed on it for a second look...that was on the 11th of April. It does not seem to be out of reason to ask for a "quick look" at the coin and send it on it's way for correction...but that may be asking too much. I would rather our host get it right this trip, then having to send it back later and create an additional delay.

Does anyone know if the coin in question gets put back at the end of the line with the attributors or where it falls in line?

I have had this done and it is usually within a day or two after calling. I don't know why it would take this long. Is it a tricky variety or something?

No, a very obvious F-119. Our host has it listed as F-114...not even close.

According to Fortin; Comments: Obverse 18 can be easily diagnosed by an extra 1 digit punch in the shield. The flag of a 1 digit is clearly visible between shield lines #8 and #9.

As stated by Fortin; Comments: Strong doubling of UNITED is very evident on Obverse 14. The doubling is located to the left of the final letters. Die doubling can also be seen on the vertical shield lines as illustrated above. The doubling is hard to detect without a multiple angle lighting source.

Definitely the obv with MPD in shield. Maybe the minmark is throwing them off. What does the mm look like on yours?

My last Mechanical error took a long time to correct, received the coin on 2/3/17 entered on 2/9/17 and finally shipped the coin back on 2/22/17. They didn't have to even look at the coin just change the label.

Looks like the 119 to me. And it's the only one listed with the MPD in shield. Should be a quick fix.

I just had the same situation on a regular submission. 2 months later no progress. It's as if you get punished for their mistake.

The lower loop of the S lines and doubling in United possibly messed them up.

Are you collecting varieties by Fortin?

I had a Variety listed on an Express crossover that wasn't noted when the grade posted. I was blazing hot over it and called them. The CSR said it went thru the Variety Dept. but there were no notes on why it didn't get attributed. So they put a hold on in it from shipping dept. to send it back to Variety Dept.. That took about 5 business days but they did get it right in the end.

Type I - No Stars
Type II - No Drapery
Type III - Stars Obverse
Type IV - Satrs Obverse, Arrows at Date
Type V - Legend Obverse
Type VI - Legend Obverse, Arrows at Date

I get the feeling that ANYTHING that disrupts the "flow" of a submission causes a delay that is longer than it should be.

• I sent in two crossover submissions, received the same day. (Could have been one....but I thought at the time that the membership "freebies" had to be separate).
• In both, I inadvertently left stickers with my own Overton attributions on at least one coin.
• The first, "non-membership" submission flew through.
• On the second, all "freebies", someone helpfully decided that they should check to see if I wanted the Overton's attributed, and on the holder! They emailed me to ask.
• I immediately said "no"...they weren't anything special.
• That one sat for at least 2 weeks, until I re-emailed to make sure they got my response. "Oh, that should get through the system today"....which it did. I don't think it was a coincidence that it happened to go through the same day I checked. More likely it was sitting on someone's desk for two weeks!!
• If you disrupt the flow, they will be delayed as punishment from the Grading Gods.

Two weeks have passed...I would call customer service again, but I am afraid that I would get the same individual, with the same scripted lines of response. (((sigh)))

Three weeks have passed. I just got off the phone with CS and the response I recieved was that the was order was sent back to the "them" and we are waiting for their response. I asked how much longer will it be, and she replied that it is was sent to "them" and is waing for thier response. I asked if I could to talk with "them" to see what the hold up was and she said that they do not discuss the matters with the customers directly and she would make note of my concern.

It seems that the the "P" in PCGS is begining to stand for pronoun (third person, plural); them, they, thier, we, etc...

There are some categories of varieties for which PCGS consults with external specialists. That is nothing new. I know that Ryan Moretti handles Morgan and Peace Dollar die variety attributions as an internal staff member , and there are likely some other series that he is experienced in as well, but the above is a practical approach. PCGS doesn't give out the info you sought for obvious proprietary reasons. Care to share what you have in review ?

They recently screwed up some gold errors I submitted, saying they were not errors. Weird, case they have called them errors in the past. I don't know how this keeps happening at what most consider the best grading company.

The lady I talked to said she talked to the graders, and they said they were not errors. I told her they called them errors in the past, and she said she was just the messenger.

For the error fee that our host charges, they ought to take another look at them at least, and annotate their findings or reasons for NOT attributing it/them.

With all the varieties I would think that the training on them would have to be extensive, similar to a master's degree in a technical subject. While I can understand the difficulty of finding people to do it right, I would think with six figure salaries it wouldn't be an insurmountable task.

Agreed, especially when the submitter tells the TPG which variety it is, which I do include the PCGS Coin Number and add a note on the variety number as well. All they have to do is verify it.

You probably had them put a hold on it.....if so you have to call and release the hold. That has been my experience.

Oh my goodness...sounds about right.

Just got off the horn, and "the order is in the final stages of processing"...more scripted lines apparently...and I do not need to release the order from "hold" status...at least not this time.

Coincidentally, my order that has been held up for so long is finally on the shipping page...just in time for two more of my orders to make into the system.
