    In 1864 they were probably paid mostly or entirely in greenbacks, not coins.

    I was figuring with the introduction of paper and the whole coin shortage they would be using paper and fractionals.

    I saw a date that matches my birthday. (only 100 years earlier, but the 18 part of the date is not listed)
