1938-S Jefferson Nickel MS65 PL
I was quite pleased to pick up this nickel a few weeks ago on Great Collections. It's recognized by NGC as PL, and grades in at MS65. With a mintage of 4,105,000 for the year; the population for PL's for '38-S is only two. I honestly didn't know that PL's were found this early for the series until I saw the listing. BTW- I did check the steps, and they are typical for '38's; unfortunately, nothing unusual on this one. ![]()

Lots of chit-chatty strokes within the center of the building?
Sure- chit happens on PL's.
Looks like it was struck by some freshly-polished dies were put back into service, hence the lines. Neat coin.
Did you check it for the individual retooling marks on the dies compared to the other one?
I knew it had some nice mirrors. I was going to bid on it but then I got distracted with the two PL liberty nickels. Are you a PL collector or a Jefferson nickel collector?
Cool coin.
Cool coin and I think it's even cooler that NGC offers the PL designation for deserving coins in what feels like a plethora of series that our host does not
Looks like a rough PL coin but they're tough to come by. Here's one I have.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
My Jefferson Nickel Collection
From the picture, I cannot tell if those are die polish lines or cleaning on the reverse....looks more like cleaning... Cheers, RickO
I knew that ATS had some other than Morgan PL's, but I did not know about ANACS. Our host does not though...as far as I know.

I collect PL's, and Jefferson's- more so PL's recently. This was my distraction in auction- I didn't catch the PL liberty nickels, or, I would have bid on those. Probably good we were focused on different distractions. Lol.
That was the first thing I checked for- it appears that there are no retooling marks on this one. I zoomed in on one area of the steps where there is the most detail; but, unfortunately, there is a vertical ding obscuring some of this. The right side is weaker. I found it very difficult to get a good close up in the slab.
They are die polish lines- here is a better pic. Thanks.
Wow... yep, die polish lines.... Thanks for the picture.... Pretty severe... Cheers, RickO
I was referring to the other die tooling marks, such as the touchups in the serifs, etc. If we can find a coin with the same touchup marks but WITHOUT the funky steps it may prove something.
Our pocketbooks thank us.
Oh, right....I just checked with my 16x loop, that's the strongest I have. The "E" "P" "R" "B" on reverse have similar touchups but I don't believe exact. Very hard to tell with "UNUM." I'll try to get photo's tomorrow. I can pull in some detail with the loop taped to my S7 believe it or not. With raw coins I can really drill down- in a slab not so much. I'll see what I can do- probably time to get a microscope.
Okay, I did my best trying to capture images of tooling marks. I don't believe it's the same as what nickeljones has; however, I'll post my images, not as good as his but you will see finite tooling- I think.....??? Imagination required
The "E" looks like it has some tooling on the base.

The "P" looks like tooled at the base- there's a hit on the "L" so can't see much...

Tooling on "R" and something on "B" but hard to make out with pics.

There appears to be some sort of tooling on the base of "M."

The mint mark on mine is mushy- not like nickeljone's "S" mint mark which appears much cleaner.

Not the right die, but thanks for checking!
