So true! Many will also tell collectors, "Don't waste your money and time getting___________graded as it is barely worth face value and you're going to get jipped". Then when that collector gets it graded anyways (like that rare worn out buffalo now worth thousands) they hunker down and don't say anything. It's OK to go against the flow and have your coins authenticated and graded! Why risk not doing so?
Just have them think of shows as Vegas for cherry pickers
People are not afraid to 'own the experience' worth many thousands of $$$, so why not stretch to own something of intrinsic value??

Bad transactions with : nobody to date
I like to own the experience. I like to try what seems impossible at first sight. Most of the time I do get a return from the experiences that I choose.
I am a working professional nature photographer with countless experiences that also profit from those memories.
I took up pacific ocean kayak fishing which costs many thousands of dollars in gear. This yielded some of my best experiences in my life while providing food on the table with the freshest and tastiest of fish. This hobby also got me some fantastic stock photography of marine wildlife including super rare photos of a humpback whale breaching in La Jolla.
About a month ago I took up another impossible sounding hobby with potential return. That is gold prospecting in the desert followed by mining in the desert. I am already into this new hobby for a couple grand, I am removing gold which by no way pays for expenses , but the experiece is insanely cool.
When it comes to spending extra on a unique coin, I have done it hundreds of times because I thought the eye appeal and rarity of what I was buying at the time was certainly worth it.
Many people worry more about what OTHER people should buy than they do worrying about their own purchases.
Paying for what you LIKE? INSANE!!!
When numismatic auctions feature stripper poles and Elvis chapels, I will heed your advice.

Even the massive resistance to paying a couple of bux to get into a coin show has me scratching my head.
I saw an old man and his wife raise hell, b/c they were asked to pay a $5.00 admission to a show. They proceeded to storm off after refusing to pay. Really? That's just a ridiculous way to act for something fun to do on a Saturday afternoon. Cheap old bird.....

Shows aren't free anymore?
@Azurescens Most are but I've seen some where they charge $5 - $15 to enter.
Money spent on coins is not gone forever like spending on travel / entertainment.
Heck u may even come out ahead.
I don't "gamble", but if I did, I would do it on buying coins--it'd be way more fun buying high risk, but big reward coins than hoping certain cards or numbers got in a row.
I often marvel at how much some of my firearms have appreciated over the years.... some tenfold. One, twenty five fold...... Now, I know some of my coins have done the same, but, like my firearms, I do not sell them. Cheers, RickO
People should spend within their means, and we don't know people's means. I am afraid of advising people to act irresponsibly. I hate hearing stories of people that have had to liquidate their collections just to pay bills or deal with a family emergency.

Unfortunately people's "means" change over the years. So, often hobbies are the first to get liquidated and I think of them nothing more that a type of savings account. Lot's of people do not have savings but do have hobbies.

You almost always forget overpaying for a nice coin, and almost never forget when you don't. ;-)
Maybe someone said this already, but I know guys who won't "spring" for a really nice coin, but spend the same amount of money on a lot junk and still not have anything worthwhile. To them the accumulation of a lot of "stuff" is where their interest lies.

I'm involved with the old car hobby. I chuckle at human nature sometimes. Some of these guys will pull in to a show and complain like anything because and entry fee went up by a dollar, and the show benefits a charity. They drive in with a $25,000 to $$75,000 dollar vehicle, yet complain about a buck's increase? Human nature, Art Linkletter said it best, 'People are funny!'
