Military Veterans, post your coins from abroad

I collected coins from every country I could while deployed, many were lost or dumped to reduce carry weight, but I still have a small Hoard. A few US tokens and stuff in pics came while on active duty.
So what do you have left?

My grandfather bought this in Italy during the war, came home and gave it to my father who served in Vietnam.

It replaced my poorly graded and worn buffalo nickel lamination, and it's a nice date.

My nephew was born in 2014, and this and it's stories will go onto him one day.

Do not have any. I left all of the Dong's in Viet Nam where they belong.

I remember when getting change in various places, some vendors would slip in other countries coins, maybe to offload them or scam me? I never cared if it was coins because I didn't spend them anyway. I liked getting other random things. I've never been anywhere in Europe but I ended up with some euros and other random things.

All I kept was the "Fighting 69th" beer coin. And the reason was our motto "Gentle When Stroked; Fierce when Provoked". Yeah you heard it right. lol

Well, I have tons of stuff, just not organized by what I got overseas per se. I've got everything from pocket change to coins bought in shops or at the big coin show in Tokyo. My Japanese pocket change is what started me on the Dansco Japan Type set, and on from there. Being stationed overseas (Japan twice, Spain once) and taking the occasional ride to other places guided me to my 90%+ darkside/world collecting tastes.

    Nice find in pocket change:

My favorite from the Tokyo International Coin Convention--bought it in April 2011:

The best challenge coin I hung onto:

I like the idea of a binder for the overseas pocket change though. Shoot, 4 years later I'm still finding the random eurocent in random places. When we remodeled we stuck some Gibraltar coins under the cabinets too.

No pics to post, but my father served in the USAF and was at Kadena in Okinawa, and then various places in Vietnam. Which is how when he came back with a bag full of Japanese, Singaporean, Vietnamese and Australian coins I got started collecting. Also left me a stash of Vietnamese and US MPC notes that started my banknote collection.

The most curious coin in the bunch, had them over 40 years now, is an 1897 Japanese 50 sen coin that he still has no idea where he got or why.

    Indo Chinese Trade Dollar.

If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.

    Thank you for your service.

What is your favorite coin that you got overseas and what was your favorite country you were deployed in?

    What an awesome thread !!

I'll dig out my Dads WWII accumulation of coins from serving in North Africa and Italy and post it with some pics of his time spent there .
He's been gone now over 20 years, but I still have all of the coins and photo album .

Here is a pic of his guys holding up a Nazi flag they acquired.
That era of men was a special group for sure :)

Just listed this one on my website earlier this week and it sold just about immediately. A well-worn carved Peace Dollar that was presumably a pocket piece of a WWII soldier:

    :+1:

That's a truly great piece of history :)
I don't think I could have sold that one Mike .
I wish I checked your site page more often :(
    Killer !! ❤

Great collection of coins, with special significance from life events. Great challenge coins as well... I have an extensive collection of challenge coins...I have coins from my Navy port calls...and then from living in Europe and the Caribbean.....I just naturally gravitate to anything 'coin' like.... ;) Cheers, RickO

As many of those who travel abroad know, paper money is gladly exchanged before one departure from a visiting country...coins, not so much. I was given the opportunity to travel to some locations that I would not have even thought about visiting, but voluntarily and non, and local coins normally are brought back. I will have to see if I can take some images of my "jar of change".
