Saw this crack today. I can't get over the geometry of it. Looks like gear teeth. Cracks to me usually follow a more random pattern. What do you guys
make of it??

.
the edge/rim of another coin struck it, hard and at an angle. these are seen regularly on morgans and peace. if you have some play dough or something similar, you can test it for yourself.
please crop your images in the future. 1.2mb is 8x larger than is necessary.
thanks

Got it! I will downsize my images. Thanks for the advice! When I look through loup, It seems to be "raised" above the coin surface, like a crack. Its hard to tell, but I am going to use play dough to check it out. Thanks!
Even easier, take a coin and damage it in the same manner. You'll see immediately what these guys mean.
Looks different than a strike from a reeded edge and as far as I know PMD wouldn't be raised.
ty sir
i highly recommend photoscape for very quick cropping with copy/paste, or if you want to do bulk, try light image resizer.
the LIR prog is what i use for auto-cropping bulk images to the tune of 5-100 or more at a time.

Thanks Lance! I will look into it.
Being raised, it is not a hit from another coin.... and it really does not look like a reeded edge strike....Cheers, RickO
.
ok, i'll walk you guys through it.
in the image where you can see the dentils, and this works out perfectly since the hit matches the orientation of the reeds, look at the hit, then look up at the reeds, back to the hit, back to the reeds.
someone can even crop out the hit area, and move the image closer to the rim and the distance and shape matches perfectly, why, because the hit is from the rim/edge.
also, it is not raised, the metal may have been pushed up a bit from the depression area but right smack dab in the middle of the hit, is recessed. also one side will be recessed and one will be raised but raised from being pushed up, not from a depression on the die.
hope it helps.

well, since we can use pcgs servers to upload images now and i don't have to go the ftp route, pcgs makes it quicker/easier, i just did the image comparison.
you can also see the quality is there but only 166kb, although i did reduce the dimensions by a big percentage.
enjoy.

looks good! Where would this have happened? I manufacturing or in circulations??
Yup. Looks like a reed hit. Its raised because the metal was pushed up a bit. Must have been one heck of a hit.
It's PMD - (post-minting damage)
As mentioned above, it's from another coin's
edge that was smacked onto the field area of
your coin.
In the photos, the top 'line' is raised, because
the area below that 'line' is incused into the
surface of the coin. The metal simply moved
from the hit of the other coin onto yours.
It's a common effect, from transporting/lifting/
dropping of bags, or the ballistic bags which
can carry hundreds of thousands of coins,
and which are VERY heavy -
