My latest Heritage Auction pick-up...Cherry-Picked 1853/4 25C Arrows and Rays

...was delivered this morning, while I am at work. The pick-up points on this coin are rather well-known, but seemed to escape the eyes of the cherry-pickers...perhaps it was the TPG holder that turned people off...perhaps the apparent discoloration on the obverse. Hopefully the latter was just bad imaging.

Not seeing anything. Did you post a photo and I'm not picking it up.

Boy, every time I spot something that is an unattributed variety, it seems to never escape attention. Congrats on whatever it was you bought. I'm anxious to see what it was.
Not yet...kinda teaser...what the heck, here are Heritage's images;

I am guessing that coin looks a ton better in hand.
Cool type. Nice AU---I'd say about 55. Looks to have some originality going on.

That seems to be what the other bidders or non-bidders were thinking.

Great undersell, well done
Just opened her up...Well, I don't know exactly how to describe the color/tone other than coppers and blues! I will show the new images once I have them done up.

Is there really a 4 under the 3? Impossible to make out.
Overdates are usually reused dies from earlier years. An 1854 die was repunched to be an 1853? Huh. Why was the 5 repunched too?
NGC has a really clear one on their site (below). But I still don't see remnants of a 4.
I've always found these suspect. But they're accepted as legitimate so what do I know.
Congrats on the score!
Lance.
The 8 is repunched as well. Here is a rough image before I head to bed;
The upper portion of the 4 is there, just in LDS.

This probably would not have gone unnoticed if it was an EDS like the image that Lance provided from NGC Varieties.

Nice catch.... surprised that others did not see that... Cheers, RickO
The LDS of this does slip by the cherry pickers' eyes from time to time. It's the same variant I bought in an NGC MS62 holder 10-12 years back, unattributed as well. The faint recutting of the right arrow stem is the first clue when the "4" is not easily seen inside the "3." There's also a die crack from her toe up to the rim by star 13. The bottom of the date digits are looped together with die cracks into the arrow heads and then the denticles. It's easier to spot the die cracks on this LDS. The die probably didn't last much longer after these cracks showed up.
Nice pick up. It will only get harder going forward to find more of these unattributed.
I sent the coin off for professional imaging, and will post upon receipt.
