My newp off ebay isnt a ms65fb as the label states...

The pictures must have been taken from a satellite, and I could not see the gouge in Miss Liberty's face. So I bought the slab and not the coin. Now I am faced with a dilemma. wwyd - what would you do?
- Return to seller. Seller has a 14 day return policy. Leave in it's holder as 65fb.
- Send back to PCGS with the guarantee program. Get it out of this holder and out of the population as a 65fb.
I like the idea of sending back to pcgs.
Doing our part as collectors when something isnt graded correctly. Unless I am wrong on this not being 65fb.
I havent used the guarantee program.
So I dont know how the program works or what pcgs would pay.
So I would value some of your expert opinions.
Thanks in advance,
Sandman

Wow that's bad. In a newer slab also. I just sent a forum member a AU58 coin that looks better.
Ken
I would return it back to the eBay seller.
The marks and tire track on the neck should be his problem to deal with.
If they buy it back, I think it would only be for what you paid for it.
You need to squint to see the Full Bands. Numerous little hits on the diagonal and vertical bands. Splotchy/mottled toning on the neutral/unappealing side. Obverse spotting and some filmy toning on the rev fields...assuming it's not pvc. Scratch is significant enough to even body bag on a resubmit. Overall a 62/63 coin imo. I'd be ecstatic if I could send that back and only be hit for shipping expenses.
If sent back to the TPG for review, it could still come back as MS65....and you'll own it.
If you send it back to PCGS I'll bet you get told it's a mechanical error. That's the cover your ass for anything under the sun. "mechanical error' wink wink
If you send it back to PCGS keep us posted, I hope I'm proven wrong.
The Seller has a 14 day return policy. If you don't like the coin just notify him/her that in hand the coin falls short of your expectations then begin a formal return.
If the Seller has E-Bay experience he will know how to proceed.
From my recent submissions that coin would be AU58 at best and most likely BB. I just think they goofed up on this one. OP needs, for sure, to send it back to the seller.
Ken
Return it to the seller.
PCGS won't call it a mechanical error but may very well say it deserves the current grade.
Lance.
The fields do look pretty clean other than the gouge. Could be 64/65 quality if nice luster. return it if you dont like it.
This is a 30-S, guys, a better date. The bands on a 30-S won't necessarily be better on on a higher grade coin. I would not grade this coin an MS65 but I am picky about hits on devices, and could never keep a coin like this.
Send it back to the seller! Case closed.

Well that sux.
I generally eat my mistakes but would make an exception and return it.

I would send it back, JMHO

In hand the coin has good luster, the fields are nice, but are the hit on her face is way past a hit - a gouge, the multiple hits on the fasces clearly make it a 62 or less.
I hear all of you, and will return it.
I just hate the fact it'll be in this undeserving slab in someones collection.
Thanks to all for your replies, and once again BUY THE COIN, not the slab!

Not with Mercury Dimes.
Ken
wheres the gouge? I see toning marks
sending to PCGS would just cost you money, as it looks close enough
... and maybe less.
I can appreciate you trying to be altruistic, but this philosophy will get your burned badly in this hobby. It would only add insult to injury if you were charged $25 only to be told that this is the new MS65.
Definitely return it to seller... I would not have that as a 65....I have 65's and that does not measure up. Cheers, RickO
I vote the other way:
Send it to PCGS. Otherwise, why bother to have slabs. If slabbed coins on ebay can be returned "just because" then the post office will be the only one making money.
Either way, send it back to the seller or PCGS, this is definitely an injustice and makes our host look bad.

Curious if the seller's pic's were accurate. If they were then I say shame on you for returning, If not the concord could not return it fast enough!
Return to sender and move on.

Pictures were far out and at an angle.
That alone should have kept me out of this one.
I dont hold any ill will to our host...
35.5 million coins graded. A few errors might happen. This is one. They still be best in the biz!
This dime will be on a plane to the seller today.
Thanks to you all for your feedback.

Remember a while back when the new holders were arriving from PCGS and the two halves were falling apart with a simple tap because they had been improperly sealed? While we saw folks post videos because they were surprised/disappointed, we all know some will take advantage of any situation. One could get a nice ms 65 FB dime back from PCGS, see that the slab came apart, pull the graded coin out and replace it with an inferior example bought cheap, and then sell the inferior coin in the better holder after reassembling it. Without a photo of the coin from PCGS, how would we know this didn't happen?
Spot on.
That's a nasty Merc. Not a 65 or FB. Send that puppy back!!
It depends if you paid for a 65 or not.

This is not a "just because" situation. The coin is clearly not up to standards. It happens. This is why many sellers and even auction houses (like GC) have return policies for coins you cannot view in hand before purchase.
