1961 Roosevelt Dime NGC MS66

AzurescensAzurescens Posts: 2,744 ✭✭✭✭✭

Figured I'd do a photo shoot under 80x after posting this guy in the toned thread. It's my favorite Roosie and favorite toned piece. My father got it off some ebay type auction house back on basic dialup and passed it onto me.

I've looked over every micrometer of this coin. I think it's better than a 66. It's hard for me to judge, especially since I'd die starving with this in my hand. But it looks like a lot of MS67-8.

Instead of making this thread photo heavy, I've included links in case anyone needs to reference what a 1961 Roosevelt Dime in >MS65 looks like under 80x mag.

I fought tooth and nail vs the reflective surface and scratches/wear on important parts of the case. They really make the coin worse and hard to see.

If you're willing to look through some detailed sets of photos, and help me in my journey, I'd appreciate any advice or criticisms. I'm low on funds is why I ask, and I also want this piece in a more modern case.

Would you crack it and submit? Think it'd go higher? To me it is worth the money so please don't factor in sale vs submission and value. It's priceless, to me, anyway.

The crack on the last A of America, the joining of the CA at the bases, the hits at the base of the torch and on its bands make this a reasonably OK 66?

I've been reading about grading and trying to get this. I hope you can see what I mean about smudges and problems on the case by the Y in liberty. The flame on the torch is actually quite good and the furthest right side separates the last flame into two.

Row 5 pic 5 has that ding line (dunno how to say it).. the acorn on the oak branch is fantastic (6.1) with good details on their leaves. The leaf that strays over onto the torch in 6.2 leaves a depression where the torch is but I don't know if that's relatively normal or something that makes it less desirable.

The bottom of both the oak and ivy are both sharp and host a well struck pluribus. The hit on the bottom band and the metal up the torch hurts but that's negligible.. the lines of the torch would be fairly solid if it was clean, I think. The bar between the top of the torch and the flame is visible and in good shape.

Please lemme know what you think!

Even if it did upgrade I don't think it would add much value. If it were mine I would preserve the nostalgia of the original holder and the sentimental value of it coming from your dad.

glad u luv it but many consider this ugly toning...maybe grade limiting

Oh hell yeah. Any coin and every coin holds a story. Sure I'd love this to be gem luster and omgwtfbbq, but I'm ecstatic those reds formed in the last 20 years.

Bonus points: The front wasn't always this tarnished, but when I took it out and saw I was happy. It's a heck of a lot better now that it's not just on the left side of the obverse.

But such detail! The acorn, the leaves the flames, the oak and ivy leaves having veins, the second flame on the far right of the torch being so pronounced and bold, the sharpness of the branches reminds me of arrows on other gorgeous pieces.. the letters are struck so fine and there's literally nothing wrong with the surface. No scratches or big dings or rims slicing them up. That's one thing I've liked about small pieces.. you'll do a lot more damage to big dollars shaking a bag around but won't on something smaller than a cent.

Also, I think the toning on his cheek makes it look like he's got a huge smile.

Cool story and coin...especially since Pops got her out of the wild and now she is yours! Way Cool ;)

Looks maxed out to me, lacking the pizazz needed for a higher grade. While it may be mark free the toning is neutral at best and appears to mute the luster.

    Just my 2 cents.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

    IT's from a Teletrade Auction.
Any NGC coin that starts with 700xxxxx as serial # was a coin which was submitted to NGC raw (through Teletrade). Although for years if you were a seller at TT you could submit directly to PC/NGC and they would grade and forward the coins to TT for sale. When that program ended you could still send the raw coins in to be graded but you actually had to send them to TT first, which added some time to the pipeline.
It was a great deal. I sent them many thousands of coins.
And then I would just wait for the checks. :D

Amazing photographic analysis.... Not the level to which graders actually operate... You may be over analyzing the coin. A 10X picture would be better if you want actual grade estimates. That being said, my opinion is that you should just leave it as it is.... Coin and holder from your Dad.. Cheers, RickO

PCGS will give verbal opinions at some coin shows. It's worth waiting in line for. If you do submit, please let us know the final outcome.
