I bought this coin back in the late 80's for $1.50 It marked as Gem BU. I will like to learn as much as possible. I would say a ms 66?

Might be gem bu but sure can't tell by your pics. Too much darkness hiding the coin.

Looks mint state and I could certainly believe your assigned grade of MS66, but truly the images are such that it can't really be determined by us.

    Hey @TurboSnail! Nice coin.

For pictures I highly suggest zooming in as much as you can on the device, and then putting a loop in front of selected areas. Let the loop do the focusing and then bring the zoomed camera in. A camera won't fix a blurry loop image.

If you put the coin on something white (like the insert to a flip), it'll help reflect light back into your lense.. so, provided you've focused, you can take pictures right above the coin if the light is bright enough.

Also you can use a deck of playing cards and set your loop on them and slowly slip more cards under the coin until it's in focus. Then your hands are free to manipulate the coin or your camera without losing focus. I also use the scratch free foam that apmex sends stuff in as to gain a few inches off the table surface (as to not have to hunch over for pictures). As for standard coin portraits, just zoom in as much as you can and bring the device down to the coin.

You can have a light from above and set your loupe at an angle to showcase certain aspects (in some light something might look doubled). Other things like brockage help if it's taken at an angle. The aspects of a coin you can see from looking above but can't photograph since your hand and device get in the way. You can also get a desk lamp that will turn up down sideways back and forth etc to get different shots. I use a basic lamp on an arm and I use the bulb housing to steady my device before taking the shot.

Also I've never gotten great pictures out of a cardboard 2x2. If you pop it out of there -- (without a staple hitting the coin!) -- and put it in a flip, you can access it easier. I only use 2x2 cardboard when I know I've checked legend motto date and all details.

Hope this helps and by the way welcome to the forum. This coin is likely in a 62 to 65 spread.

Truly, I don't think your images are bad at all as they give one a good opportunity to come to an opinion on the overall fabric of the coin, but they are a little rough for using as a grading guide.

+1. I don't see anything that would make me think otherwise. Cool beans.

That light slash across the neck takes an MS 66 coin (or better) down to MS 65. In hand if it's not so visible then MS 66 is about right.

If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.
