A well circulated 1849 Moffat $5...

...oh the stories she could tell.
Bought an early gold deal from a local fellow collector who had some amazing higher grade stuff, and then at the bottom of the box I found this. Very cool and although I flipped most of the deal this will be a keeper!
As a southern gold guy I had to go to coin facts to learn more about it. So here's the link cause I am not the guy to answer any questions.

I have no reason to believe it's not. Just checked HA archives and it looks fairly consistent with other lower graded examples. But I am no expert on Moffats.

Sweet. Was she slabbed in the OGH with CAC when you found her?
Just did the deal a month or so ago. I sent the whole deal to CAC before I sold it.

Great coin! Private gold has always fascinated me.
It is nice to see coins that served their purpose.

Why not CaC gold? Looks FN12 (at least the reverse). Possibly a worthy crack out.
@elmiracoin the coin could have had adjustment marks to begin with.
i think it looks great...and would be even better in my box!
That's a neat coin, and enjoyed reading the history of Moffatt & co. What does SMV on the rev stand for?
I believe it stands for "Standard Mint Value" but I am open to corrections.

I have wanted one of those for a long time. I have never got around to buying one.
What was in the rest of the box?
That truly is such a deep and rich history to that coin. And I mean, look at it, it's gorgeous.. I always wondered how many bars these coins got slapped on & every man drank enough to make their ancestors proud.. or at inns, tucked away in pockets on clothes we don't even wear anymore.
That's an amazing looking coin, given the amount of wear... lovely.
'dude
Very nice old gold.... a lot of character there.... One of those coins you wish could talk...
Cheers, RickO
Thanks!
Super sexy! Congrats on a great historic chunk o' gold!
I have confirmed that "Standard Mint Value" was correct.
