YN Success: Simple Gifts

Since the forum runs typically to gloom and doom, I thought I'd share a recent success.
The Northside Coin Club here in north Denver currently holds its meetings at a community church. The church was holding a fundraiser for the school, and as a club we thought it might be a nice gesture to contribute a numismatic gift basket for an auction the church was holding as thanks for allowing us to use their comfortable and inviting space for our monthly meetings.
Several members contributed everything from Whitman folders to US and world coins, a Red Book (my contribution), and a host of other starter items in an attractive wicker basket.
The winner, a young lady of about 12, dropped by our last meeting to thank us for the wonderful numismatic treasures. The father insisted that while he was not a collector his daughter used her persuasion to will the family to victory. It was a cute moment. The entire family stayed for the whole meeting, which included a presentation on world coin collecting and pricing.
In addition, I had a spare auction catalog from Kagin's recent ANA money show auction, and ensured she would also have a wonderfully illustrated resource full of color photos and expert research--add fuel to the fire as seeing the awesome coins in the Red Book did when I was a kid.
Upshot: you never know where or who will be a coin collector, or a YN. Dismissing entire age groups because they don't fit the traditional collector mold would seem short sighted. Any opportunity to extend the collecting bug to anyone, young or old, is a good idea. All it takes is some effort.
The club was also attended by a few new guests, including two women, both of whom had fathers who collected coins and served in the armed forces. It was a great turn of events and an encouraging sign.
Gonna get me a $50 Octagonal someday. Some. Day.

I also continue to see plenty of dealers with free stuff for YNs at shows, and I think it is such a great thing!

This is one of the best posts I've read in a long time. Thank you for sharing!
I always tell the kids to take a few coins out of my bargain bin. There's a bunch of different series so figure they can pick what they like
HAPPY COLLECTING
Such a small investment can have such a large impact.
Btw, according to the YN, "old" Washington quarters consisted of pre-state quarter Washies. Not the silver, but 1965-1998. We all had a good laugh.

Nice work by you and your club.

My Washington Quarter Registry set...in progress
That is a great story... Interesting from several perspectives.... a YN, new adult females interested in coins..and the family attending... bet the Dad starts working with the YN and gets a mild interest himself... Cheers, RickO
