Grade this Morgan 1898 O?

While I wait for my 1902 S to get back from PCGS I picked this up the other day. Common date nothing special, paid $30.... I was just in awe with how amazing it looked. Frosty white, brilliant luster, and no or at least there seems to be no hairline scratches. How would you guys grade this one? I used natural lighting for the pictures. Thanks!

Oh jeez how kind of you to do this giveaway!! ;)

But lol, probably AU58 - MS62 is my guess. Nice coin for 30 bucks not bad. It's very pretty thank you for sharing.

It may very well be your lighting, but the luster appears flat to me and the central portion of the eagle's breast also looks flat. However, that may be due to strike considerations, as well.

Looks like a slider..the breast feathers are really worn or very weak strike on the back. Is there any cartwheel to it?

I would call it AU58, but if you are describing the luster as brilliant maybe it is better in hand. It doesn't look particularly frosty to me. Either way, the eagle's breast looks slightly worn to me, rather than weakly struck.

Indeed the luster looks flat. AU58?

63/64, did you take the photos outdoors on an overcast day?

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Yea the cartwheel is definitely there. I can never take good pictures of it. And it was overcast out as well.

That is about the worst "lighting" you can use for photos, 2nd next to (usually) direct, full sunlight.

I really like it. Nice fields, minor rim damage on obverse, stars and lettering look sharp on obverse and reverse. 64 to my novice eyes.

It's a 58 or a 64. What looks like circulation might be the lighting.

Looks a little "baking soda" from the images.....maybe just the pics

I probably would have picked it up for $30 too. Get a picture with a couple of desk lamps.

As it is, looks like typical O mint weak strike, maybe a 64?

Coin is an AU 58. While the obverse looks great the left wing tip confirms the wear on the breast feathers.

Coin doesn't appear to have any wear. Eagle's left wing tip (right facing) looks fine....don't see any problem with the right one either. Liberty's cheek fully frosted. I see what others are saying is the baking soda look. But, really can't be sure either way with the way the photo was taken.

    62 from your pics.

AU58 unless you have better pics.

Here are two more pictures with a single light source. Cartwheel is evident, more details on the breast feathers. Now... as for storage of this coin would airtites with the foam ring be okay? Last time I put a Morgan in one of those there was a tiny tiny bit of wiggle room the coin could move around in, they were for Morgans so idk how that happened. Suggestions? I don't really like the cardboard flips...

I don't really like the look of the obverse in that picture..... It's so hard to get a decent picture. Really looks much better in person but that's the best I got.

63 from second images. Definitely an UNC.

The change in lighting changes my opinion of a low end 58 to 62. I think it's a 62. I'd never pay money for that as a 63 or 65. Her face and cheek have worn, there's chatter from her eye down to her neck to the left of the bust and on her neck.. her bonnet is worn. Liberty is clear but not hammered clear. The eagle's breast isn't full but much better in the 2nd pic. The reverse is the best side of the coin, and I can forgive the two notches at the arrows. Probably a 61/2.

MS 63/63..... Not bad for the price.... you could 'self slab' it for protection.... Cheers, RickO

I am now at 63. Not worth sending in.

  • DollarAfterDollarDollarAfterDollar Posts: 3,215 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yeah, the first set of pics made the breast feathers disappear and showed flatness on the wing tip. These look like a different coin entirely. This is in MS 62/MS63 range.
