Hi,
Does anyone hold a similar 1849-O, Type Three gold dollar in there collection? I have found very few archeival images. I did find one very similar coin in the 2014 Eric P. Newman Sale.

Nice looking coin! I have seen a few.
Here is another one: ebay.com/itm/1849-O-GOLD-LIBERTY-HEAD-DOLLAR-NGC-AU55-RARE-SHATTERED-DIE-VARIETY-3-/132114516794?hash=item1ec2a38b3a:g:YYEAAOSwux5YSIVx
That is a "Type One" coin, being of the first adopted design for the gold dollar denomination.
Within the year and mint mark, it is "Die Variety 3," being the third die variety identified for that year and mint mark by a noted researcher. It combines a late die state of his obverse #1 with a late die state of his reverse #2.
You are correct with your coin nomenclature. I most surly was mistaken and should have made a much more concise statement; that the coin was a Type One, Variety Three 1849-O. One would hope that the coin Type would be obvious from the obverse, since it was only used in the Type One gold dollar, although noting that the reverse is unique to the Type One as well.
Regardless, my question was in regards to the die state and if there anyone has additional information on the particular die state. There is very little data available about the Variety Three, including population data.
Those old gold dollars are interesting... quite a comparison of the difference in economics between then and now... Cheers, RickO
cool coin!
