1970s unopened on eBay - interesting caveat

Came across someone with a few unopened boxes from the 1970s that have the following caveat (all-caps is his; emphasis mine):

I HAVE OWNED THIS BOX FOR YEARS...SMOKE FREE HOME...THE SEALS ALL LOOK GOOD...GOOD FOLDS...GOOD ROLLER MARKS...SEE PICTURES. IMPORTANT: WHILE I HAVE NEVER OPENED THIS BOX OR ANY PACKS IN IT, I DO NOT GUARANTEE THIS BOX AS UNOPENED. BBCE GUARANTEES BOXES AS UNOPENED. IF YOU INSIST ON A GUARANTEE PLEASE GO TO THEIR WEBSITE AND PURCHASE A BOX FROM THEM. I CAN GUARANTEE THAT THIS BOX CONTAINS MANY HUNDRED UNTOUCHED PRISTINE CARDS.

Two rhetorical questions:

  1. How can he guarantee that the box contains "many hundred untouched pristine cards" if he can't guarantee that packs aren't resealed?

  2. Is it reasonable to believe that a seller would leave thousands of dollars on the table if he believed the boxes were legitimate?

Walk away. Not worth taking a chance.

I could give the seller the benefit of the doubt but he seems to be aware of BBCE and Steve, so ignorance is not a defense. It seems like sellers that put that type of info in the listing are hiding something.

I think there is still a large number of sellers, ebay or otherwise, that aren't aware of BBCE, don't believe in 3rd party box authentication, or believe their expertise is just as good as Steve's.

    Sounds like a scam.

They are telling you up front the packs aren't good.

    I agree with Grote.

How can you tell roller marks and folds are good if you've never opened the box? Hmmmmm?

  • ndleo is correct. If someone is clearly aware of BBCE or other 3rd-party graders, and then says "but I will not guarantee anything," there is likewise no need to trust the seller about anything, either. Walk away.

Maybe the seller is characterizing the box this way to prevent a buyer from returning it through eBay. But, if it were truly unopened, the difference between the eBay-realized sale price and the BBCE-verified sale price would be huge. So, to answer your second rhetorical question, it is both unreasonable and unlikely that someone would leave that much money on the table.

Maybe someone should ask him why the 1974 Baseball box looks like someone used it as a hockey puck - how can cards be pristine when the box looks like it was shipped without a box. Stay away from this one.

Classic fraud narrative. Run, don't walk. Anytime "I think their real, but....", it's fake.

In addition, the 74 box contains packs from different wrapper variations and many have unnatural wrinkles and very sloppy corner folds.

While these auctions look bad, I've gotten some of my best deals from sellers that don't use BBCE.

There are definitely great deals out there, but for pre-1980 wax, Ebay is a virtual minefield.

The seller has been discussed here before. Quite simply, this person is re-reselling the already questionable garbage being traded on eBay. I guarantee despair and anger after purchase at the hands of a not-so-clever cat. Just take a look at who he buys from.

He must buy them under another ID, of his last 200 purchases 165 have been 1952 Topps cards and none have been packs or boxes.

Yeah I did notice that. I recall several months ago having a suspicion about him purchasing lots which were similar to items subsequently resold. Not to throw around lame accusations, though. Without solid facts, I'd agree with those who suggest using caution or just avoid altogether if there's any doubt. The merchandise isn't attractive to me.
