So I've found these and took a chance on them. Can anyone tell me exactly what I have and possibly the value of them?

The first pic. is a miniature replica of the St. Gaudens $20.00 gold double eagle.
It is a gold plated 'novelty' item.
I'd hazard a guess that the second item is miniature replica of the South African gold Krugerrand.

I agree with PRECIOUSMENTAL....and there is usually a paper insert telling you the composition of the product... Probably not solid gold...just a thin (microinch) plating. Cheers, RickO

Sometimes these miniatures are 10kt gold, or even 14 or 18. They were just originally priced way too high for what they are.

Unfortunately you cannot tell from a picture. Check each piece for an indication of fineness, or the accompanying paperwork if any. If you wish to sell them for scrap gold a coin shop or a scrap gold buyer may be able to do a (somewhat destructive) test on them.

  • I was told they were 14k but wasn't for sure but I paid under $20 for them so I'll probably just hang on to them

Yep, the price you paid, sez it all! Most probably, the posts before me, gave you your answer. :) Still pretty cool, though. :)

I've had many of those little twenties that were 14 k. I haven't seen a gold plated one.

I sold something like that recently; mine were 0.5g of 58.5% (14K) gold, which is about $11 worth of gold. They were from the Republic of Liberia, sold by the New York Mint (now GovMint I believe).

It's my understanding that a lot of gold replica pieces were made in the mid-to-late 70s into the 80s. A lot of people couldn't afford gold or "couldn't" own more than a few ounces, and replica pieces filled that gap.
