This variety was discovered by Lewis Fletcher and is now posted in the Variety Vista website under the buffalo nickels
doubled dies section. Similar to the 1915 doubled die obverse that many have been looking for over the past few
decades or so. Doubling visible on the eyelid, nostril, and upper lip.

Its 1917 DOUBLED die, not 1917 DOUBLE die, though from my experience double is used more often than doubled
Did a little tracking of this on eBay and found it to be true.

Yes-"doubled" is the correct term. Technically EVERY coin could be called a "double" die since they are struck from a pair of dies-even the uniface stuff.

    .
    news to me.

    thanks for sharing.

despite buffalos being Godless, i do really like the varieties/errors for the type for some reason, the design as well.

I think this will turn out to be fairly scarce since it has just been recently discovered and buff collectors have been looking
for double dies like this for decades.

Nice find, I just had the chance to look thru a bunch of teen-fated Buffs, wish I'd known about this one a couple of days ago. Also looks similar to the 1930 DDO-2.

Me thinks a mint employe from those times would laugh hysterically at us for calling this a DDO imho.

Yes some would laugh as I will admit you could classify it as a minor doubled die. But a DDO nonetheless!
I believe in having all varieties, especially the doubled (obverse and reverse) dies reported for all to see.

Nice discovery! but if you don't mind me asking, SEGS? Why not NGC, ANACS, ICG or more better, PCGS? SEGS? I don't get it.

Remove the black carbon and submit to pcgs. More credibility and collector praise.

PCGS would not slab this as a new variety. It has not yet been reported in Cherrypickers’ Guide.

What methods of black spot removal are acceptable for PCGS with respect to cupronickel and even silver coins?

Toothpicks (the round kind) and olive oil. Don't use vinigar.
