My pawn shop pays off again

Yes pawn shops and antique shops are good to crazyhounddog. My last visit, yesterday, I found this pretty little 1924 Peace dollar. It's graded 63 in a freaking doily and trust me when I say they have no idea what a doily is. I got an amazing deal on this piece as I go in there all the time now and I think I'm the only one that buys his coins and silver. So they give me great deals to keep me coming in, I guess. That and I stop by and just jaw with the guys when I'm in the area weather I purchase anything or not. I purchased this Piece dollar for 13 bucks below the pcgs price guide. I'm happy :)
Thanks for looking and happy hunting, Joe

Besides thinking it's a beauty it was undergraded too
    .
Turning it over I saw the grade limiting mark on the eagle's body. Such a great looking coin it's easy to ignore the reverse blemish, I only noticed it when I checked out the strike.

Couple interesting die cracks over the eagle

  • crazyhounddogcrazyhounddog Posts: 14,070 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm not calling the 63 anything else but what it's graded. The scathing on the eagle is exaggerated by the imaging as the lights cast shadows which makes it look much worse than it really is. The same for using only one light at 12:00 like GSC does and makes all of their coins look hammered.
At any rate I love this pretty little Peace dollar and the holder is in amazing condition. I have 3 other 24 Peace dollars so it's not like I needed it. But I didn't have a doily 24 Peace dollar, now I do. :)

    good pick up.

Is it a VAM 1 of some sort lots going on with the reverse.

The golden color and doily make this a home run.

Few years ago I found a handful of '09-O quarters and halves at a local pawn shop for mere melt. I did buy a nice '99-O Morgan in BU with a rose toning at spot a couple of months back - again at melt.

Isn't that fun? I love to treasure hunt at pawn and antique shops in small towns. It pays off for me quite often. But shush! Don't tell anyone :)

If it's undergraded and in a doily, the biggest bang for the buck would be a gold sticker. Don't crack it.

Pawn shops here offer nothing but melt value ... why? Easier that way for them I guess. FRUSTRATING!!!! It completely removes an avenue of purchase I would otherwise have.

Insert witicism here. [ xxx ]

OK. It's a typical common-date Peace dollar in sub-gem condition. There are thousands of these. They are easy to find this nice. The coin is a minor part of the story.

Getting it in a doily holder for a killer price - that's sweet!!!!!

There is no earthly reason to crack or have it re-graded. A green or gold CAC sticker would indeed be nice and add market value & liquidity. BTW, it has a fabulous obverse, appears to have strong luster, and has a nice, original look. I see it as a 64/64+. It has a shot at a gold sticker, but far from certain.

I'll just throw it on the pile. After a while, a couple a years, I'll pull it out and say to myself... where in the hell did this come from. Then I can appreciate it all over again. That's what I do with em. Now, what do you do?
