Roosevelt Dime Change.........Did you ever notice this?

I have noticed thru the years a difference in the Roosevelt Dime appearance on the obverse. I couldn't put my finger on it until today. When I noticed the difference in how far or close LIBERTY was to the rim. So I looked at my coins year by year until I found the change. It was 2000. Before 2000 LIBERTY was close and 2000 and after it was far. Plus with I got the pics side by side I noticed the size of the head is different and the space between the back of the head and rim is different. Here is a side by side pic of the 2 years. Camera is the same and lighting is the same and distance between camera and coins are the same. The difference jumps out to me. What do you think and how many already know this?

Sure enough, looks like all of the raised details have shrunk (further away from the edge) just a smidgen on the 2000-P 10C.

Other coins have done this too. Take a close look at the cent and quarter.
So do we now have big head and small head varieties?
Lance.
What I am really wondering ........ is there any over lap in either direction??
Never noticed that. Thanks!

In theory....the dates are on the hub, so there shouldn't be...(Believe that's true, but someone will quickly correct me if wrong). So, even if they did used the wrong dies/hubs, you wouldn't know it since they would have the date associated with the head size.
Added: Guess it's still possible to make an incorrect hub....But it would be a much more significant "oops", I would think...
Anything's possible. "Doubled Dies are a thing of the past!!"
I have noticed it! While it would be cool if there were large/small head varieties in and around that transition year, I guess due to modern minting methods, you wouldn't be able to have any, as TommyType states. Fun to be observant enough to see it; after all, it was done for a reason (improve die life and thus the bottom line, I would guess is the obvious choice.)
now ya got me looking at all my 2000's for a "big head of 99" error.

Fitting the dimeman would find such a thing...Don't get a "Big Head" dimeman!

There are changes to the obverse and reverse nearly every year. Most are subtle and there are some mules.
I want a 1999 small head or a 2000 large head!
bob:)
Nice comparison, would have never noticed.
I had noticed that.
But then I am a coin nerd.
Good pick up Jon.... definitely a difference. I have not been focused on modern dimes beyond the silver Rosies I find in the Coinstar.... Now to find a large head 2000.... Off to the hunt... Cheers, RickO
Sounds like what they did to Lincoln on the cent in 1969... I've never heard of a transitional piece, though.
