Textile toned peace dollars. Let's see some pictures
I love toned peace dollars. And textile toners are uber rare but I know there are some great examples out there. Post a picture if you have one, even if it's not your coin.
This one is not mine, I don't remember where I snagged the picture from but my guess is it's the best example that there is.

I don't know if this is textile toning or how it toned but it's different

This is gonna be a short thread... lol Textile toned Peace $ are very rare.
Thank you nk1nk. That first coin is actually mine. Its one of two textile examples I have. This one is one sided, the other has dimpling on both the obverse and reverse of the coin where it laid in between a fold in the canvas bag undisturbed for a very long time.
Those two and the the coin posted by CN are really the only 3 I have seen in 15 yrs of searching for toned Peace $. I have a raw example but Im not quite sure its textile. I think it might be; its has very slight dimpling.
They are beyond rare. There are those in the inner circle who will tell you these type of Peace dollars simply do NOT exist. They are a figment of collectors imaginations.
None of these are...

Very True statement!!!!!!!
They can be 'fabricated' without too much trouble....
Cheers, RickO
I figured it would be a short thread but even if just one picture of a textile toner I hadn't seen was posted it would be with it. It's cool to know who owns the coin I posted, where did you find it? How long have you had it? and if I haven't asked too many questions already, how much did it set you back?
I started collecting toned Peace $ long before anyone was really paying attention to them. I dont remember when I got it but Im pretty sure I got at a Long Beach show in the early 2000s. Its in one of NGC's #7 holders so it was slabbed between 1997 and 2000.
I dont think I paid very much for it. Probably between $100-$150.
The other one I have I found years later. Its in a PCGS holder and I paid considerably more. But that coin isnt as nice as this one.
There's actually another textile toned Peace $ I have that I forgot to mention... its from the Binion Hoard. The reverse is mostly dimpled. That one might be nicer than this one, but the dimpling isnt as strong but the color is nicer.
Pics?
I had them on my other computer who's HD is now dead. I have a back up on my iPad but that one is old and is not wifi compatible so I gotten figure out how to get them off the iPad... lol
It is sad that the market doesn't seem to appreciate the rarity of textile toned Peace Dollars. Indeed, toned Peace Dollars don't appear to be selling as high as they were 2-3 years ago.
Congratulations and neat coin!
I dont know. I just got back in after being out for 2-3 yrs. And the asking prices on Ebay are crazy. I bought nicer coins for less money 3 yrs ago. I dont know what the auction results look like. I really didnt see any toned Peace $ in the recent Heritage or Goldberg LB auctions though. I havent looked at their auction databases since though.
Neat, but it doesn't look like textile toning to me. Many of the spots are amorphous and lack consistent patterns and sizes that one would expect from a textile toner.
I think it is textile just from a different type of canvas bag under different conditions. What other explanation is there ?
BTW I went back 2800 sold Peace $ on the Heritage Auction site --- to Nov 2015...
I only found 10 examples that I would call colorfully toned... and the prices were strong to very strong.
And here's a 1922 63* that sold just in January for $1527.00... its a nice coin but it isnt that special... so from what Ive seen the prices of toned Peace $ arent coming down... to me thats a $800 coin. I bought a 63* Binion with more vibrant toning in 2014 for $750.

And this is not a $500 toned Peace $... lol

And the reserve wasn't met. Either the photos must be horrible or the consignor was very foolish IMHO.
On the 1922 DDR, how much premium was for the DDR versus the toning?
Not much. There are over 300 of them graded. This isnt a top pop for the VAM. Its not a rare VAM.
Helluva alot easier to dip one of your "white" coins.....;) Cheers!
Yes if they were so easy to fabricate you'd see a ton of them in dealer cases. Along with dimpled JFKS, Ikes, Washington Quarters. Textile toning is probably one of the hardest to recreate artificially.
@TonerGuy..... Not if you have the right materials.... Cheers, RickO
I saw this drawing when googling Textile Peace Dollars, it was a drawing on a textile canvas;

Not sure about the "earring" or lamination in the hair.

I love the fact that I can purchase it as a Duvet Cover, Tote Bag or Shower Curtain... my wife would kill me if she had to sleep under a huge Peace $ every night... I might have to buy it.
I call BS. Post what you know, what the materials are and examples of textile toned Peace $ that you personally created.
Educate me (the rest of the community) if its so easy to create textile toning.
The financial pressure is too great that if it were easy we'd see many more textile examples in slabs. This isnt an industry of only morally upright people. Someone beside you would have figured it out and mass produced them.
No different than the Peacock Ikes and the 314XXX toned hoard of Peace $... which BTW are now both MA according to PCGS and NGC. Those coins still trade at huge premiums... why wouldnt someone do the same with hoard of textile toned Peace $ ?
And if you cannot post photos of your examples, at least share the knowledge. And if you will not share the knowledge at least show me all vast numbers of PCGS/NGC textile toned Peace currently for sale (or have been sold) Links will suffice.
And if you cant be bothered to respond with links, well then stop throwing shade.
@TonerGuy.... I resent your implications .... I will say this... first of all, I do not do photography..have never posted a picture, and may never do so in the future. Second, I will not share the method I developed..it would only be used to cheat people.... third, my years of experimentation were flooded with many failures, when I did find the method, it turned out to be deceptively simple. Your commentary is inflammatory and not worthy of further response. RickO
Thank you for the response I knew you would provide.... lol
Speckled toning is NOT cardboard and/or bag textiled toning, for sure.
Not textile, but nice none the less.

Awesome coins! Love toned or any peace dollars...
I love and appreciate toned peace dollars, and also textile toned Morgans. I have bought and sold about 10 toned Peace dollars over the years, only one was remarkable, and also handled many textile-toned Morgans. I always am looking for textile toners.
There was a guy named Mike (in CA) that I used to talk to about 3 years ago on my long commutes home from work, he specialized in high-end toners, and sought me out through my eBay store. All told we talked for dozens of hours about all types of toning. He told me that the weave in Peace dollar mint bags was tighter, the dots were smaller and closer together.
One day I found a certified Morgan with a much smaller textile pattern and he said that he had seen Morgans like this, and that they were put into bags made later for Peace dollars. I only saw one ever, the one I owned and later sold. I will dig up a picture of it and post.
I finally found a textile toned Peace dollar this year after more than 20 years... and yes, I too believe they are exceedingly rare. We all know that Peace dollars with attractive color are difficult to find. I sure do like this one, the dots are perhaps 1/2 the size and much tighter, just like Mike said.
