Who's got a pic of his very early hand engraved die design for summer seminar strikes circa 2005 of there abouts? IIRC it was a triangle with a lion or sphyinks or something to that effect.

Verne Walrafen had some photos of early Summer Seminar pieces from Dan but his GMMNut.com website recently went offline
Just ran across this one which indicates Dan burnished 26 of these 2006 Nevada alternate state concept quarters showing his design that was submitted to the Governor of Nevada for the state quarter competition.
This is a great find for me because I'm a big fan of Dan's official design submissions and Mint coin competitions in general.

Here is one of Daniel's 2008 Knights of the Coin Table club issues. It is the Award Medal with the 'moon reverse' and is described on the website, but without an image. Here it is ~ absolutely one of my favorites...
It's not often that an old time Dan piece comes along, so it's special when it does!
2007-D Jefferson Concept Dollar - Silver, Satin - Mintage: 40 - by Daniel Carr - NNC PR70 SF (Robert Johnson)
There are only 40 of these Presidential concept dollars so I've been looking for this for some time.
Imagine my surprise when I learned that not only were PCGS, NGC, ANACS and ICG slabbing Dan @dcarr's pieces, but Bob Johnson's NNC (National Numismatic Certification) was as well!
An interesting thing is if you look at the Moonlight Mint Catalog, it says these were slabbed by ICG at the "highest possible grade", so it looks like it was crossed to NNC.

I once saw a piece struck in pewter from a die he designed and hand cut. I believe it was a sphinx and pyramid if memory serves. The dies were used to strike a handful of pewter planchets using a 7-ton screw press operated by an ANA summer seminar class in the early-mid 2000's I believe
.
That almost sounds like a Ron Landis story. I would imagine that Dan could have attended one of the ANA's engraving classes that early.
This wouldn't happen to be the piece that you remember, would it?
I've been looking to attribute it. Maybe if Dan sees it, he could confirm or deny . . . . .
So, I think these are my earliest Dan Carr pieces. They are all dated 2001, but I'm not sure if he minted these before 2001, or after. I know the Bessie Coleman strikes were part of the design competition leading up to the Sacagawea dollar, which should place the creation of these somewhere in 1999, if memory serves.

Yes, the taxi cab was done by George Cuhaj (editor of the Krause World Coin Catalog and partner with "hobo" carver Joe Paonessa at the Badger Mint in Wisconsin). And I think the "Roma" die was by Joe. I don't remember who did the other two.
Mine was the "fire dog" & pyramid - not my best work obviously - at the time I was a lot better sculptor than I was at hand engraving (and it didn't help that during the class I lacked a magnification system that worked for me). I also hadn't had time to work on my design before the class and I had to think of something quick on the morning before it.
The "Art of Engraving" class at the Summer Seminar was a great experience. Potential students had to apply for the class and only a limited number were selected. At the time of my application, I had already designed the NY and RI state quarters and I had sculpted several coin designs including my Apollo Astronaut concept. I didn't yet have a fully functioning mint, but I had been cutting large 8-inch diameter models and those models were used like galvanos to make dies on a reduction lathe.
The Art of Engraving class was offered via scholarship - there was no cost to attend for those selected. The class spanned two years. The first year was a week-long class sculpting in plaster. I did a lot better at that. The following year was a week-long class in engraving in metal by hand. Joe Paonessa was my roommate in the dorm both times.

I sculpted the Apollo Astronaut, Bessie Coleman, and Sacagawea concepts (in that order) during the 1998-2000 time frame. But at that time I had no way to realize them in physical form. So they were not actually minted until 2004-2005. The "2001" Apollo Astronaut concept dollar was the first thing I had minted.

You know, now that I think of it, I see quite the similarity to this one . . . . . .
I recently was able to acquire one of Dan's 2009-D Bi-metallic Astronaut Concept Dollars and was surprised at just how pronounced the "cameo" of the silver center of this piece was.
Is this typical for all of these, or might this be an indicator of an early strike / die state? Either way, it's insanely cool.
I don't think that I've never seen this much cameo contrast on any of Dan's strikes. The stars are particularly nice.
What is really nice is when one acquires one of the really low mintage pieces like the 1 of 9 error 1/4 ounce 2001 Apollo Astronaut pieces.
Dan mentioned that he didn't think the strike was as full as the 1/2 ounce pieces, but I think the deep cameo of the devices on the light strikes is fantastic.
