Went to the old folks home this morning.

This morning I got up at dark+ and left the house before sunrise. I drove over two hours to the old folks home. I mean coin show. Before the show opened I had a prearranged meeting with a dealer to sell a couple of slabs. I got the price that I wanted.

When the show opened at 10 AM there were 40+ ( only one was under 50 years old ) people waiting to go inside. I had taken on the task ( for no charge ) of selling some modern Commemoratives, Proof American Eagles and Unc. Eagles for a long time friend. I went over to the Silvertowne table. After about an hour of figuring I received a fair amount.

I next started on a tour of the floor. Silver one ounce bars were selling for $19.25. I observed several people buying some. I saw an 1838- D $5 in PCGS AU 58+ and a $50 L.E. 887 Fine in PCGS AU 58 ! One dealer had a complete set ( minus the 1959 I think ) of Red Books for $2100. I saw the ANA annual Convention attendance bars from 1941-1986 ,that had belonged to Paul Kagin ,offered for $250. I thought that was cool.

I did not find anything to add to my collection. I talked to some old friends and had a good time. After a couple of hours I headed for home.

Reminds me of Bill Knapp's. There was always an ambulance in the parking lot

Well, unless this was a BIG show, where people plan vacation time specifically to attend the show, I wouldn't expect anyone under 50 to be there on Friday at 10am!!

Other than that, thanks for the report! :)

Probably a valid point. Back in the day I never let work get in the way of a coin show.

Did the red books include all of the special editions?

50+ is probably a good bridge age for this hobby. Serious coin collecting takes serious disposable income, and for most of us, that does not come into well into our 50's. There is no story here.

I believe that they were just the regular editions.

Very uplifting report. You say there were 40+ old geezers there when you arrived. And you say that you were the only one under 50. How do you know? Did you check everybody's I.D.? I'm with you sport. I'll even bet the ranch that you're one good looking under 50 devil of a man. The crazy part is that those 40+ old farts could even make it there by 10a.m. AMAZING!!!!!!

There's a good 30-45 gap too, which I think caught the tail end of baby boomer collectors.

    I got nothing.

I'll be 58 this year and I feel I'm slightly on the young side at our coin shows.

    Definitely an aging crowd.

Oh, there's the odd whippersnapper that thinks he can outfox me, but he's got a lot to learn.

Anyways, I'll look at these coin shows with a new perspective now thanks to the OP, as a look into the future where one day I will actually have to sign up for the old age home (lol).

Usually it is at these small shows where I find the most interesting and inexpensive items... Stock certificates, Bonds and even an occasional insurance policy as well as interesting world coins.

I am not what anyone would call chronologically young... although most would never guess my real age.... Think young, act young, stay young..... Party time ... I better not show up to a show early on a Friday or people will know I am old..... :D:D Cheers, RickO

    Nice report!

As for the age thing: hobbies that involve shelling out money require that the hobbyist be done with life's big demands expense-wise. That usually means the kids are grown and launched, and there's money left over now when the bills are paid. That, in turn, also means that you're over 55. The main exceptions are rich folks (the "hobby of kings") and (on the other end) paperboys before the discovery of girls.

Bottom line: coin collectors aren't all old because no one new is interested. It's because the new people with interest usually are only slightly less old!
