My son has developed a pretty good nose for this. We spent an hour or so looking at the Devens, MA show today. He was looking for either a $2.50 Lib or a $5 in the 350-ish range he'd saved for all year. I wasn't hunting very intensely but figured if I found a type date $2.50 Lib with a look I liked I might be a buyer, as it's been a while since I've had anything filling that slot in my set. I was about to hang it up when he called me over to a table I hadn't gotten a good look at before because another dealer had basically spread out a lawn sale situation all over the guy's cases while they worked on a deal. Son had located a beautiful, original skinned 'quake year 1906-S half eagle in NGC 58 at a very reasonable price, which he happily bought -- and it was framed on each side by nice original quarter eagles. I wound up buying one, a sweet 1907 in 63 with a satiny halo.

That'll probably be the year's big pickup for each of us. Always nice to spend a morning basking in the hobby.
