Found in my newly acquired wheatie buy...

joeykoinsjoeykoins Posts: 17,866 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hi guys, Through searching through the Wheaties I just purchased at the Tinley Park Show, I came across this very interesting Abe. At first you spot a Lamination but further scoping it out I notice also the rim was pretty squared and sharp! On both sides as well, the obverse and reverse. Could it be a possible Proof coin? I also noticed on the tire track likeness, a piece of metal folded. Can you tell me what you guys think? Sorry for all the photos taken. I wanted for you to get a good idea what I'm talking about. Thank you. -joey

Here are both sides of the rims,

"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!

Strike looks weak for a proof

Really? Even though 90 years old? I always thought if the rim is squared away, like thus, most likely a proof, no? or maybe, Matte proof?

Did they make proofs in 27? Know the early years they did and 36 they started up again.

Not a proof. I've never heard of any proof cents being made in 1927 or any of the 1920s.

Ok. Not even a Matte Proof? I thought they made those in 1909?

Proof Lincolns were made from 1909 to 1916 and then stopped until they were resumed in 1936.

Joey, I may be wrong, but that looks more like PMD than a lamination...... let's see what others think... Cheers, RickO

The lamination is of course legitimate, but the rim was damaged by the same contact that flattened the 7.

I thought it had the look of a vise mark or pliers? Doesn't look mint made to my eyes.

If you look at the "9" in the date, if it were done by pliers/vise, the 9 would show damage as well, wouldn't it? By my pics, the 9 is untouched. While under the 9, it is effected.

As I said, there is both a legitimate lamination, AND post-mint damage.

Perhaps the lamination error stuck out from the surface of the coin and was sharp so someone fixed it by compressing it with something. Pennies were 'worth more' back then...
