Yet another collecting category; bullion patches.

SkyManSkyMan Posts: 9,493 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just learned about yet another collecting category today, they are called bullion patches. These are patches that some of the threads used on the patch are (gold and/or silver) bullion. Specifically I learned about space mission bullion patches. The bullion thread is used on the mission patch design to liven it up. While I have no interest in collecting them, they do look kind of fun.

Here's a link. If you go about halfway down the page you'll start to see some pictures of some patches...

Hey Skyman. Here's a set I picked up recently and made me think of you...
It's a 3 ingot set in a blue velvet flip box...

Here are a couple of military unit patches. The 461st Deadly Jesters has gold thread for the mask and the 550th Silver Eagles has silver thread for the eagle. Both units were inactivated years ago.

Edited to add the 461st Tac Fighter Squadron is now the 461st Flight Test Squadron.

    Cheers

    Bob

Silver thread on a patch doesn't seem practical. How do they keep it from tarnishing?

    Not a clue. Maybe coated?

Being a patch on clothing I would think any coating would wear off. Perhaps it was plated with white gold or platinum. Perhaps it isn't actual silver and it's just a silver colored metal such as a copper-nickel alloy. I guess I'm over analyzing this. LOL

This one actually does look like tarnished silver...
