I have an '86P handy (was in my pocket) and the P is placed similarly.... looks ok to me...Cheers, RickO

The mint mark was placed on the reverse 1938-1964, disappeared altogether in 1965-1967, and reappeared on the obverse 1968 to now.

Imagine my excitement! Two minutes ago I just posted about my futile thirty plus year attempt to fill the 1913 slot in my Liberty nickel Whitman folder. And then "BAM," just like that I read here that somebody has located an 1896 Jefferson nickel. Even with a weird mint mark it would still be a keeper. Some people have all the luck.

I believe the mintmarks were applied to the dies by hand in these days, so there is some variation in the placement of the mint marks. I'd agree with you that the placement is a little bit out of the ordinary.
