Nothing goes up all the time. Most stuff other than bullion related things, went down from 2009-2011, including better date, circ Liberty Seated. Wouldn't be surprised one bit if the PCGS price guide was all over the place for seated halves, especially scarcer dates in VF-AU. Considering the price guide is inflated for common date stuff, it could be a challenge to figure out what's right and what isn't. For a date like an 1872-s half, it's probably behind. For stuff like an 1870-cc, 1879, and 1891 half, it's probably not that far off as a full retail guide. Not many collectors enjoy paying "full retail."
I think it is probably like that for many series. Some of the better material can be low with the common issues or condition rarities running on the high side.
That's not exactly what I meant. Some of the much better material gets flipped around a lot (like CC halves). Key dates tend to sit in dealer's inventories waiting for a flip or the end retail user. It's often easier to value those because those have a fairly good turnover in the market, often with publicly viewed auctions prices. The common coins are just type coins, hence almost any date for type can determine their pricing. It's the stuff in between that doesn't seen to get the attention as they are scarce, but not scarce enough to get price guide attention. Things like 41, 48, 49, 57-0, 70-s and 72-s halves. I would think the PCGS price guide is more accurate for the seated halves than say the seated quarters.
While I'm not knowledgeable about the seated material, I can say that within the last month the entire Classic Silver Commems were updated with a reduction in value of 10-20 percent nearly across the board. It was a sea of red as they say. :'(

right now, nothing is more accurate then auction prices realized. pcgs admits due to david halls health it is way behind in keeping up its pricing guide.
the only thing with auction records, you have to know the real condition of the coin and were two genuises chasing it for stupid money.
many seated coins simply have not traded in recent years so the issue is a mess
roadrunner-you don't want to have a go at anything i say. i only buy and sell millions every year and yes, i have built more great collections then anyone.
I pay little attention to it. I view it as a crossbar and the prices listed as what a mid range rare coin will sell for. I have seen many go for more and many for much less. It is nothing more than a general guideline.
Research... guides, auctions, online, shops.... The extent of your research will give you the confidence to buy, sell, or pass.....and research must be current since markets change... Cheers, RickO
