    That's pretty nice overall! And a 60 to 63 is a wow!

The old ANACS gold foil hologram reverse slabs from 1990 or so are very conservatively graded by today's standards. They were fairly competitive with PCGS and NGC back then, even if they had a small market share. Anyone sitting on well-selected pieces should expect upgrades on many of them. The last one I had was an 1896-0 Morgan in MS61. I sold that coin in the ANACS holder for nearly PCGS MS62 money to a sharp up-grader. That's probably MS63 today.

I'm not surprised that BIGAL had good results on any gold foil holders. Nicely done.

I have a whole bunch of little white ANACS slabs with big major error coins in them graded MS60 which was common for error coins back then. Today many of those coins would grade way higher in a PCGS mint error slab. I leave them alone as I prefer the little white slabs.

While not quite as good as your experience, I had pretty good results just getting ANACS small holders to cross a few months ago:
    1 Upgrade (AU-58 to MS-62)
8 Crossed at grade (Mainly XF and AU coins, but one 65 Morgan)
2 Downgrade (1 step on each, neither shocking)
1 DNC (Possibly due to a hairline scratch I didn't think was all that distracting. Might have crossed at one grade lower, had I allowed it.)

Guess one could ask why I bothered....But I'm happy getting them into my "preferred holder".

I have one gold coin in an old ANACS small holder... will just keep it that way....however, it does look as if it would upgrade....probably 'owners eye'.... ;) Cheers, RickO

Looks like ANACS grading of old gold was very solid...

you own a tarnished coin??? :)

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

Technically, it is tarnish... but was not obvious when I purchased the coin.... long time ago...and I am not a seller of coins... so it just relaxes in my safe... :) Cheers, RickO

Looks like a nice group of coins, glad to see you did well with them.

I have a number of middle date large cents in the old small ANACS holders, and I think most of them are solid for the grades and should cross if I ever bother to submit them.

I agree regarding the gold foil ANA hologram holders. I would add that many of the early holders with the green text in the background also seem conservative compared to today's standards. This is especially true of the lower numbered alpha-numeric serial number holders.

Nicely done. Agree that many of the old style ANACS contain some nice coins, that do fine at the services today.

Thank you cameo nut, now I understand, RR was talking about the old ANA gold foil hologram holder not the old ANACS gold foil hologram holder.

The holder I was describing was an old, old ANACS holder from when the ANA owned ANACS. The text was blue and the reverse had a hologram that was gold colored and had the ANA insignia on it. I'm still looking to see if I have an example in my image archives. I may have deleted the images I had for the pieces that I crossed or sold.

Here is an example in this NGC thread (3 post): http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=5843034.

Mine has the dual ANACS symbol on the reverse, light green lettering and number 734197..... not sure how old that makes it, but I have had it for a long time. Cheers, RickO

  • Walkerguy21DWalkerguy21D Posts: 11,789 ✭✭✭✭✭

Mine all look like the ones BIGAL posted, with light green lettering, and no gold foil.

This is especially true of the lower numbered alpha-numeric serial number holders.

I have an 1806 half cent WE0082 that I cracked out and put in my 7070 back around 1990 or possibly earlier.
