NGC Certifies Unique Cent

Discovered in November 2016 by a Minnesota collector.
NGC called it an error, so there are still only 7 1982 variety cents to collect.

It kind of makes you wonder though how many 1982-D small dates were set aside by collectors thinking they were zinc, when in fact a few were bronze. I bet there's going to be quite a few more of these come to light as collectors start to weigh these coins. They are interesting.

You have to be a hard-core searcher to look for that error. But it seems logical that there was more than one made.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I dont think many will turn up. It takes a patient man to search through rolls of Lincoln cents for die varieties. Someone willing to weigh every one of them would be very special indeed, even if you did just the 82-d's and 83's.
Every time I came across a 1983 cent that looked copper to me, I set it aside vowing to find my scale and weigh the damned thing. Time would get ahead of me, and the suspect coin would be lost to the ages.

I'd think that awareness to this particular anomaly with the 1982-D bronze small date would bring out more collectors who don't typically weigh coins to search for errors / varieties based on weight.

I haven't considered this up till now- I'm sure more haven't either; so, pretty sure more of these mint errors will come to light. Maybe not by the thousands- but a respectable amount that might surprise; hopefully so, I'd like to own one!

I would be surprised if more than one or two are found.

Once you look at or hold enough Lincoln Cents you can tell instantly if a 1982 is bronze or zinc. Does anyone have an idea of what this coin might be worth?

    Yeah, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I'm guessing $500-$1000

Added that to my list.... and I do have a nice digital scale... Cheers, RickO

I separate out all my copper cents and found the easiest way of telling zinc from copper 1982s without a scale. Copper cents ring when they're flipped or dropped, zinc ones just go thud.

Yes, the copper coins are quite different in heft and resonance when you pay attention.

As I said, I have a digital scale... it is small about 3x5 or so..and can sit close on the table when sorting coins. Quick and reliable... Cheers, RickO

Why is this considered a mint error? Has the Mint stated anywhere that they did not intend to make any 1982-D small date cents in bronze? If not, I think this should be considered a variety rather than an error, just like the "close AM" cents of the 1990s.

I've been keeping all the 1982 amd 1983 cents I come across. I have for quite a few years now.
Like Ricko, I have a nice digital scale, just need to dedicate the time needed.
$20,000 might be a good impetus.

At that price, I need to do some serious searching the next rainy/snow day.... ;) I could suddenly be pursuaded to sell a coin....Yeah, like I will ever find one........ :D Cheers, RickO

I know someone who tosses every 1982 in a jar and then when it starts to get full, he weighs them.

A thousand years from now, when all the zincons have corroded away, this will be the only 1982-D small date left.

Remember, you read it first here.

It's fun to have something like this show up. I'll bet that more will be found.
