Hi guys, I know a 1988 Dime should weigh, 2.27 Gms. So If this coin is an Copperwash, what should it weigh? Thanks guys.

Here's a couple of close-ups.

I believe it's post-mint damage, but that doesn't answer your question. Clad coins often end up looking like this if they spend any time in acidic soil (forest, sand at the beach, etc...) or if they are treated with some acids. I would bet this coin spent some time in or on the ground.

Damage from long time burial as others have said.

It's post mint environmental damage. Most corroded clad coins turn black, but I've seen them turn this color too.

    Same for these too?

Sorry for the blurry pics. How can one tell, if been buried or something else?

Yes, the pictures you posted indicate the same type of post mint damage. Perhaps a chemist or metallurgist can explain to us why some copper-nickel corrosion is black and some is brown. I'm not qualified to do that.

If you want a real copper wash coin, improperly annealed planchet, sintered planchet, buy a certified example as there are so many fakes out there.

Here is a PCGS example that I sold last night for $29 which is way below the grading fee for a mint error .....

Cool! Your coin looks exactly as mine, how in the world can one tell the difference? By weight or no?

No my coins surface is way different than yours.

The real ones have a certain look to them that you have to know how they look. Buy a certified example. they are not that much.

One of the best ways to tell that a coin is improperly annealed is the presence of luster. Generally, if a coin has environmental damage, the luster is diminished/destroyed. Or, the discoloration is due to a surface contaminant that doesn't have luster because it wasn't present when the coin was struck. Also, the darkened color will not usually wear away on the highest points of the coin with light circulation. That is what happened to your dime.

As for your Mississippi quarter, that very well could be an improperly annealed coin. I'm surprised it was dismissed so quickly. Check out this example. Dozens of improperly annealed Mississippi quarters have sold over last couple years, and they all look like yours. Better pictures would help make a determination.

@joeykoins PM me your address and I'll send you a nice improperly annealed (black beauty) nickel.

Here are some close-ups of the Miss. Quarter. This Quarter is more different than the others. All grey in color, Obverse+Rev.

    Do these shots help any?

I would like to repeat what GoldenEgg said above about luster, that Mississippi quarter does look like it could have original luster.

I'm hoping? Goldenegg suggests that maybe my Mississippi Quarter that I posted earlier (bad pic, compared than latter) has that potential for making the Improperly Annealed family after all? He asked If I can take a better picture. So I did.

Do not jump to conclusions so quickly, these type of off color coins need to be carefully looked at in order to determine if it came out of the Mint like that or if it came out of the ground, fountain or any environment that could effect the surfaces.
