Use of a black light to detect putty.
I often hear of the use of putty to hid flaws in coins. My question is has anyone that has a coin that has putty applied to it run a black light over it to see what shows? A black light should return a different color than gold/silver where the putty has been applied and even the smallest applications of putty should show a different color. If there are any coin grader or ex graders do the major TPG entities ever use a black light for such things?

There are some types that will show up under black light... I am also told there are some that will not... I have not personally seen those that will not... just listening to some experienced people. Always worth checking... I keep a blacklight handy, they have many uses for people with interests in coins and other hobbies.

@grip...Yes, scorpions will glow under black light... also good for marbles with uranium glass.... @oldgoldlover ...I agree, though I have been told that there are some types of 'putty' that may not. As I said, I have not personally had this experience.... Cheers, RickO

Short wavelength UV works best, but it must be used with adequate eye protection, and careful management of any stray light. Long wave (aka "black light") helps in some situations.

I decided to check my coins at the hotel and it looks like there's a lot of putty on the bed, coffee table, floor....

Don't they detect scorpions at night?
ricko I have used it when collecting Indian artifacts to detect rechip on stone points. I cannot imagine how anything like epoxy could possibly return the same color as a coin.
Dipping silver coins in acetone can show altered surfaces as well. The acetone will not evaporate as it normally does. Instead it kind of sits there.

Never heard of this before. Have you tried this?
