1925 was the last year that you could find the 2 different reverses. Can you see the difference? The 3rd picture shows a 1926P reverse and how the reverses looked until the end of the series.

and a reverse from a 1926P Merc.

  • I recall reading that the master hub was damaged during 1925.

I have looked at these yesterday and today... and still do not see any really notable differences.... some slight variation in the letters, but that is very minor... What are the key points? Cheers, RickO

E PLURIBUS font looks a little different, the two stars look a little different. Other than that I don't see a big difference.

Insert witicism here. [ xxx ]

Just above the middle band on the right hand side look where the stems hit the bundle of sticks in the first picture. The second picture shows where the stems are completely off the stick bundles. The person that replied first was correct with the Master Die being damaged. Small difference but very noticeable if you know about it. I believe some 1923 and 1924 dimes are like this also.

Wow.... I see it.. but that is really a small difference... good pickup, I would (and did) miss it... Cheers, RickO

If "... the master hub was damaged during 1925..." and "...some 1923 and 1924 dimes are like this also..." then the hub was replaced in or before 1923, or there was some other cause.

I was going by memory on the 23 and 24 dimes. I could be wrong. I will look it up again.

I was wrong on the 23 and 24 dimes. The damage happened in 1925 and that is the only date that shows both reverses.

Here are central detail images of 1916-P (left, #1152-3441) and 1925-P (#1136-2490) dimes showing the most obvious differences in original and replacement master reverse hub. Also, note that the 1916 coin shows considerable manual engraving in this area, particularly in extensions of branches to the fasces. (Photos from Heritage Auctions’ archive; HA.com)

Very apparent in those pictures... Thanks Roger... Cheers, RickO

Do all pre-1925 dimes show retouching similar to the 1916 coin, above?
