Toned ASE

My father passed away almost 5 years ago now. We collected coins on and off together since I was very young. I found this ASE in his collection not long after he passed away. It had some purple to patina toning on the reverse then I put it away until recently. I was stunned to see how this simply beautiful toning had progressed to the obverse and toward the center.
Anyway I thought I'd share some pics of this stunning beauty.

Very nice. Those cards can tone ASEs nicely and that one is becoming a killer. Nice bit of sentimental silver

Sorry, to hear about your father. My father also passed 5 years ago this July. So I know your heart. What a Beautiful Eagle your Dad has left you! It Toned wonderfully. It looks like ,what us Toner fans , call a Bullseye. Many people would pay good money for such coins. but If your like me, when my father has left me with a coin, you would want to hold on to for Life. I don't know if you know the story about my coin from my father, but it is my avatar. My Dad engraved it when I was born. I decided to send it in to our Host and asked for them to title it, " Dad's Dollar", and as you can see, they did. Once again, nice eye catching Silver Eagle. -joey

Some in cardboard most not. For some reason that's the only one with stunning tone. Others are just patina ect.
I wonder what this one would fetch to the right person?

While yours is a beautiful coin, they are not uncommon with that type of toning. Tens of thousands have been placed in those types of holders, and a small percentage of them tone like yours. If I were to estimate a price on yours, I would guess 50 raw and between one to two hundred in a PCGS holder. This one below is on Ebay right now.
A beautifully toned coin. Perhaps you should keep it in memory of your Father. It would look nice in a PCGS slab.
If in a PCGS holder I'd put around $125 on it and take around $100. Raw in card around $60
Best to get it graded now so that encapsulation stops the toning process.
Personally I'd keep it in and monitor it once a month to see how the progression goes. It can get better like @bolivarshagnasty's which means more of a premium but if it starts going dark send her in asap

I like it as it is now. I'd get it graded now. I have several in those old holders that have toned quite nicely.
That's a pretty one. Slab it and sell it for 4 times what its worth.

The 96 is a Premium coin and the 2008 "Burnished" can be a real winner. It's called, the "reverse of the 2007"! $$$$$$$$$$ The Burnished are special Silver Eagles. It is specifically titled, "Burnished Silver Eagle". They should be in a velvet case?

Yes I have many proof and unc ASE's some 2008's and others. Some were mine and my father had many. I put them together to help organize the collection. Difficult to go through because I have to open each one to see which date.
It would be nice to do on a rainy day now that football is over.
People collect what they like... although I think the tarnish craze is partly because many see that they are valued and follow the parade.... I am amazed at the premiums people will pay for environmental damage.... Cheers, RickO

@ccmorgan... I am not color blind... actually have passed all the color tests - multiple times due to what was my profession....It simply IS environmental damage... the silver is reacting with sulfurous contaminants and thereby changing the surface of the the coin - irreparably. This is environmental damage - classic. Now, it is true that some people find this attractive... it is also true that some people pay exorbitant premiums for this damage. I am not one of those people. Cheers, RickO
