Jefferson Nickel Variety Of The Week: 1940-S/S FS-501 (RPM-001)
Crew, sorry I've been slacking a bit on posting my "Jefferson Variety of the Week". I know how much you look forward to these every week! Yeah right!
This 1941-S/S RPM variety is not a tough one for us Jefferson Nickel crazies. However, when you've been hunting as long as I have, there are some interesting variations that can be found for this one! I have several RPM's with the large Die Break on the top of Monticello (Top Picture). From my observations, this will be the dominant feature of this variety with the S/S ending up being a secondary feature. Though, we do need the S/S to make the Registry! Over the years, I have found varying stages of the Die Break all the way down to having non at all (Middle Picture). In my hunt, I found a 1940-S with the Die Break and NOT being the RPM variety! I have not been successful wrapping my head around how there are dies with similar Die Breaks and not have the same Mint Mark (Bottom Picture)? I do not recall seeing any other date with a Die Break in this location in all my years. What are the odds of 2 different 1940-S dies with a similar Die Break?
Your observations are welcome and as always.....Happy Hunting!

This is one of the few varieties I've picked without a loupe due to the die break. Not hard to find, but hard to find nice. Thanks for the posts, keep them coming.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

I have one a those but it's a 1966. Looks like a seal on the roof.
