take a look at the 1811 cent in lot viewing.
That thing must be SPECTACULAR if Denis Loring said, "The most awesome large cent I've ever seen."
Holy crap! I now will have to clean my keyboard after drooling over the 3 1793 Liberty Cap Large Cents. I could not afford the juice on any of those.
I browsed the sale yesterday, lots of great looking coins. It will be interesting to see what the handful of coins the Pogue's bought out of the recent Missouri Cabinet, Cardinal, and even Gardner sales will sell this time around.

1799 Large cent I would love to own along with some of the early copper half cents, classic large cents, heck anything!
Yes some nice stuff, I'll be bidding on some.
Hoard the keys.
So this is where my old 1855 half dollar ended up (ex James Stack 1975, James Pryor 1996, Mike Riordan 2002, RR 2009, Malibu 2010, Pogue 2017). It first sold in James Stack for around $850. PCGS MS66 CAC and likely the best one graded. Now I'm scratching my head why the Pogues didn't buy this back in 2002 when I did ($14,500) or before me at the Pryor sale in 1996 for around $9K (as PCGS ogh MS65). Auctioned in 2009 for $38,500. Then went for an incredible $54K in 2011 in the Malibu collection where apparently Pogue and someone else got into a bidding war. The $20K-$25K estimate seems rather low. But I don't see it going over $50K again in this market...and w/o Pogue/Gardner bidding. I bought the coin (65 ogh) figuring it was a PQ 66. In fact I had a 3 seated halves at that time in MS65 rattlers/ogh's. They all went in together in 2002/2003 for PCGS regrades.....all 3 came out as 66's. The Stack/Pryor 1874-s ogh half dollar was also one of those 3.
Hey, the Pogues could have bought it from me for $30K back at the 2007 ANA when I was offering it. I actually had a major dealer write a check for the coin....and then returned it 3 days later claiming it wasn't "fresh" enough for them....having only been off the market for 5 years and not over 10 years. The "freshness" thing didn't seem to bother the Pogue's any though. It was also ironic that the dealer who backed out had it briefly listed in their inventory for $38,500....a 28% mark up. And at that time, there was a CU Forum thread circulating where they emphatically stated they never mark anything up more than 25%. This is all now part of the "history" of this coin.
The Malibu "person" only had it for 20 months....the only owner of this coin since at least the 1940's to own it for less than 5 yrs. The circle of life comes back around again.
Just like the Cubs - some of these coins don't suck.
Congrats to the S/B crew for what I am sure is another awesome catalog.
Truly exceptional coins..... Cheers, RickO
Photos weren't up just 2 days ago. They are now. Here's a link to the seated coinage....just a couple dozen coins. But the bulk of the MS67's in the collection are from these. A number of them from the 2003 Lawrence Stack collection. Several from Jung, Swan, etc. No mention of stickers on any of these. And I know some are stickered.

Exceptional in an absolute sense, yes. For the grade on the holder....somewhat. I viewed the dollars at Long Beach last year. The quality for the grade was mixed.
You felt that some were overgraded when viewed personally? Cheers, RickO
Coin porn...I may not be able to define it, but "I know it when I see it"
I felt that some were more original than others.
Still no CAC beans.
What would be the over/under on the % that would sticker at the current grade.
Any educated guesses from the people that collect at this level?
I'd take the under at a 50% line. That is not to say that anything is over graded but rather that CAC criteria was not necessarily a factor in their buying decisions
If all the coins are devoid of CAC beans, that means some were removed. I would think the majority of their coins were purchased before CAC was around.
Let's see if they jack up the reserves for the top items at the last minute again.
I'd take the over. Gardner came in at around 54-56% stickers. I think Newman was in the 60's. And Gardner had a significant number of NGC coins vs. Pogue. I would expect numbers at least similar to these guys. Dave Akers wasn't exactly "easy" on what he recommended. You can verify the numbers by going to Heritage and doing a simple search. I think most of Gene's seated coins were purchased pre-CAC. He bought with the intent of finding the best coin available for the money regardless of holder. He wasn't buy with the notion of getting CAC stickers down the road.
All I know is the early dollars were way under 50%....based upon the first sale and my lot viewing of the second sale.
I must admit I getting a bit tired of all these Pogue sales but the coins are really nice to look at.

Love the die cracks:
I have looked at the auction listings, sighed and had two nights of sound sleep interrupted by a day's workload. I am now returning to eBay to see if any new listings have appeared for So-Called Dollars.
I am glad the Pogues didn't delve into that realm of the Hobby.
I like the look of the 1837 proof half dime and dime.
