Metal detector find. Buried clad will often turn reddish-orange.

100-1 what they said. Copper quarters don't escape into the wild and go unnoticed for 50 years.

It could be a beach found coin. My wife found some a few years ago with a metal detector on a beach that looked like that but most were worn more than that.

I found one with worn red finger nail polish. My local dealer says it's worthless. Do you disagree?

    Yes. It's worth 25c, assuming it's a quarter you're talking about.

It was a nickel although I've heard the same thing happens with quarters. Someone told me once it was applied on vending quarters used in pinball machines.

PMD will not increase a coins value... nail polish on coins is not uncommon - though I have no idea why it is done... Cheers, RickO

Sounds like an arcade quarter from back in the day for complimentary games.

It's not missing the outer clad layer.

    It's a environmentally damaged coin.

Old copper plating, imo. Corrosion would
show up differently on the surfaces.

I can see some of the copper coming off
    the rims of the quarter.
