Are there any remaining large hoards of Silver Dollar bags still out there?

Millions and millions of Silver Dollars were released by the US treasury in 1962-63. Does anyone know if large hoards of silver dollar bags still exist? I have to believe there are some still out there.
All glory is fleeting.

Depends on how large of a hoard you refer to, but assuredly there are people sitting on dollar bags out there. Unfortunately, none that I'll probably ever see.

I know a guy who has (40) 1,000 dollar bags of 90%. None of them are Morgans though. All seperated by denomination from dime to half. He stores them in old rusty paint cans.
I don't know about bags, but large collections of BU Rolls still exist. Just last week I bought a BU roll of 1880 CC Morgans. This was a roll my boss sold a customer back in the day. On occasion I do get original mint bags of 90% in the shop, most have little premium.
Here's a nice stash my dad had stocked away... I helped him sell them to a member here many years ago.

I wish I woulda been able to keep them somehow. The pics sure are cool though.

I personally know two men who have bags of unopened Morgans. One lives here in Nevada and the other in Montana. I've tried for years to wrest them free but alas, no success. The one here in Nevada bought a new Chevy Pickup truck with one bag about 5 years ago......Dealer traded straight across, bag was unopened I was told.
Yea, more than you can imagine.
Those are fantastic photos @Meltdown

Agree! Thanks for sharing them. Drool. Drool.
Here is my favorite article about bags of dollars from David Hall. @homerunhall

Most of the biggest hoards are gone but there are still a lot of smaller hoards. Even with the dissipation of bags there are still 20 bags of Morgans for every bag of eagle reverse clad quarters. The Morgans are still out there in collectors hands while the clad bags were never saved at all!
Montana, Nevada. Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado....... that's where I'd look.
Thanks Wabbit.

I was told by somebody afew years back (although, not enough faith in this person to 100% believe) that he knew of a guy(one of his customers) in the Greensboro, NC area, that had an UNC bag of 83-cc Morgans.
Stuff like that should be smelted and put out of its misery.
I would think original unopened bags would be of the most value.
I have not seen with my own eyes but he was a patient of mine and he and his adult daughter told me what he has when they saw a coin pic on my wall above my office desk. I have no reason not to believe him as he's a lifelong Vegas resident (or nearby). He was around and collecting when these came out in the sixties.
bob:)
I have no doubt that there are many bags of silver dollars out there... some will likely come to light in the next ten years... just basing that on statistical expectations of longevity.... Should be interesting. Cheers, RickO
I used to know a guy who knew a guy who allegedly had a bag. It was all hearsay.

A dealer I knew that passed back around 2004 had a number of original Morgan bags in his estate. When they went through ANR at the time they passed on the common date bags. So another dealer I know bought them all. I believe he still has them. I could easily see thousands of bags distributed among the dealer/collecting community. Whether there are 1,000 bag hoards still sitting out there under 1 person's control, I don't know. But, I suspect there probably are.
Dumb question: when we're talking about bags, are we talking Unc bags straight from the mint or mixed unc/circulated bank bags?
Check out my iPhone app SlabReader!
It could be either. Both types were part of the release in 1962-63 though most were probably Unc.
Mach1ne:
Bags of circulated, common date silver coins are usually not interesting, IMO. I hope that this discussion focuses on Treasury Department sealed bags of uncirculated silver coins, especially Morgan dollars. I am interested in the toning and general coloration of the coins that are seen when these bags are opened.
Would any of the members like to share their experiences in inspecting the contents of sealed unc. bags after they are opened? Did anyone take pictures of coins that emerged from such sealed bags?

Original mint-sewn bags that have never been opened I believe.
A dealer in San Antonio TX has access to tons of 'em and routinely does NGC bulk submissions - -predominately O mint dollars from the 1880s.
A bag, part of a 135000 coin hoard, is for sale on eBay

I noticed that - they cut n pasted a roll offering
It is a bag for $42,500.
Still overpriced IMO.
That depends on whether it is a fresh bag or has been picked over and put together.
A lot of collectors, investors and old estates sitting on bags after bag of $ilver dollars

At my age, when someone says "depends", I think of something else.
Ain't no depends in that auction, most likely picked over more than the trash bin in bums' alley.
I can't find a bag of mint sewn nickels from the 60s or ,70s. I have quite a few bags of Lincoln s that I use to weight down the gun safes. I would think there are few true unopened bags of Morgan's. To much money to be in the dark if you have some
