Post a coin from (1934, 1966, 1969) 1972. The Last Man on the Moon, Gene Cernan, died today.
Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the Moon, died today. Cernan was born in 1934. He flew on three space flights. His first flight was Gemini 9 in 1966, where he became the second American (and third person in history) to walk in space. His second flight was Apollo 10 where he was the Lunar Module (LM) pilot. Apollo 10 was the dress rehearsal for Apollo 11, and flew within 9 miles of the Moon's surface in May 1969. Cernan was the Commander of Apollo 17, which flew in December 1972, and became the last human to walk on the Moon's surface. His final words on the surface were, "We leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind".
I had the good fortune to talk with him multiple times in both formal and informal circumstances, and he was always a sociable guy.
Post a coin from 1934, 1966, 1969 or 1972 in Memory of Cernan.
This coin was imaged by Bob Campbell, and I think he did an excellent job.

Love that image of him. Must have been exciting growing up at that time.

Special breed indeed - the current generation will fly there virtually with googles......
Appreciate you giving us the news.
Couldn't imagine how much work was put in to even qualify.
A great American. May he rest in peace. Wonderful thread.

Sad that the regular news outlets didn't do much with this. The ranks of the moon-walkers are thinning out a bit. God's speed Gene.
Sad news...
