can you see the circle of black dirt on the reverse?

do you think that is from a coin? if so, what coin is it (based on size)?

if not, what do you think caused that?

factors of 1863: 1,3,9,23,27,69,81,207,621,1863 ... check out more on 1863, the number

EDIT to add...

if you have a coin that you think could have sat on top of this one, post it.

My guess would be something rubber based. I've seen black streaks on coins allegedly caused by rubber bands over paper envelopes for many years.

I'm going to guess another coin just like it. That's just where the build up managed to occur.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

It looks like plain old dirt to me, and I've never seen a rubber band streak on a gold coin.

Plus the pattern would not fit! Of course someone could have found the right size rubber band and sandwiched it in between the coin and something else!

I'm not saying it WAS a rubber band, just something MADE of rubber or a similar organic material, that eventually decomposed and became imbedded onto the surface. My point is, since apparently I need to spell it out, is that it wasn't caused by another coin sitting on the surface.

Not sure that the dirt was caused by another coin, but it is possible. Perhaps a bronze two cent piece which developed verdigris on the rim?

I tend to think maybe a purse or leather wallet as already suggested. I love the dirty gold look regardless. Great coin.

I love the coin and agree with the leather wallet or change purse suggestion.

Maybe it was stored in one of these, with one or two of the original contents. (I will let you Google it)
