COMPLETE submission disaster
Opened 2 full boxes of 1980 baseball and one box of 1979 basketball. Spent hours with a loupe getting down to the best of the best. Dreams of 9s and 10s. COMPLETE FAIL. What a nightmare. Going to cost more to grade than I can get back from them. What the heck? Two gorgous Hendersons straight out of packs into holders. Looked flawless. Clearly I am an idiot.
Brand new out of a pack Dr. J with no visible wear gets a freakin 6? My lord.

That is a total downer. I would crack and resubmit the Henderson cards and probably the Dr. J. as well. You might have just had the "grader of death" for this submission. Post pictures of those 3 cards if you can.
Split up the cards... Sub again.... A 10 can be a 8 on any given day.... The other way also
The guy who graded that probably just got his new health insurance rates and took it out on you.
Two Henderson 8s and a Ryan 9 is not bad. Certainly paid for your sub and then some.

I pretty much can't see the difference between most 8,9, and 10s on newer cards.

Sorry to see such rough grades when you expected mostly 9's and 10's. I agree that after careful inspection of the cards when you get them back, if you still think the money cards are better than what they graded, then crack them out and resubmit.

'79T Basketball is notoriously difficult to achieve high grades. The card surfaces are plagued by flaws. I gave up on subbing those many moons ago. Still pining for an awesome English RC, but very tough. A MINT 9(PD) means there was quite likely too much speckling in the dark areas.
I just had a sub pop with 9s on 1979 English and Theus RC's if you (or anyone) are interested.
It very likely has a tiny wrinkle. A wrinkle drops an otherwise mint card down to a 5 or 6.
I know the feeling.
Stingy, stingy, stingy seems to be the theme as of late.
Just got an order back last week, included 11 McGwire 1985 Topps...my best ones out of a 60 card vending lot.
Centering and corners all looked at least worthy of a 9 and I avoided sending any in with print blemishes.
Here are the results:

I don't know why I keep sending them my cards.
Would like to see scans. All are tough years for centering, printing and stock. Yes, has to have wrinkle or what I would call a buibble. My 79 Dennis Johnson got a 5. Thought was 9, yes had wrinkle when got back. Consider myself to have a good eye and it happens to all of us.
Agree with Dan~1980 Topps are deceptively difficult to obtain in mint to gem mint grade due to surface issues and the softer paper stock Topps used that year and is the reason the Henderson commands the price it does in Mint 9 or Gem Mint 10 grade. It's also not uncommon to slightly overgrade or overlook slight defects on cards we submit to PSA, too, especially when you are new to submitting cards.

As someone who cracks and resubmits all the time (signed cards), I can say PSA is very consistent.
Will they sometimes change? Yes.
Do 6s often become 8s? No.
When you get the cards back plz post some pics so i can learn from your sub results. thank you.
I don't know if PRO or BCCG is still around, but if you want confirmation of your uncanny ability to only submit 9-10 grade cards then they're the go to guys.
I'd be interested in a Henderson if you have scans.

I don't know who KbKards is but I can tell you whomever is behind the ID is one of the smartest people on the board when it comes to cards. You might not like the comment but I wouldn't put this person in the troll category.
Takes awhile for the ol' sarcasm detector to kick in around here.
I hate to say this but we have all been there. Before I submit again I plan on getting the boards opinions first. Some of them have a keener eye then I do.

I feel your pain. I just had poppage yesterday and on a 103 card order I had 12 half grades, a MC qualifer even though I checked NQ on all the cards, and an evidence of trimming. Keep in mind these were all cards from a single source who owned them since childhood and of the over 200 cards I have subbed to date this is the 1st to hit a trim. Graders of Death are prevalent this holiday season.
Appreciate today-
Bill
Eotd, this is a very subjective game we play. If you need a refresher, toss a raw dog up here and ask the savviest of peeps to lob two pennies into the fountain.
Can you say run the gamut?
I have only re-submitted one card - I have submitted it 3 times because I feel its a solid 9 - and it has come back an 8 every time. Tells me the card is an 8.
They call me "Pack the Ripper"
I would have called PSA as soon as I saw this sub pop. TWELVE half grades?? C'mon, that is ridiculous.
They call me "Pack the Ripper"
MC you will get regardless of qualifier ask. Just like MK. As for the half grades I have seen some and none really seems to be arbitrary. What it does do is promote resub when few half grades pop in a sub. I just don't think we can speak in absolutes without looking at the devil in the details like anything else empirically.
Better an 8.5 than an 8, lol..
In my experience, some graders refrain from using the half grade at all, while others do so more frequently. I have gotten back 100+ card subs with no half grades.

We all have been there before. Wish you better luck next time.
Same here on a Rice rookie, I eventually gave up on ever submitting 86 Topps Football again.

Funny when I read "Rice rookie" I was thinking 1975 Topps baseball.
I used to love Jim Rice as a kid. It seems like he doesn't get brought up very often, which is odd considering how great he was.

He gets brought up in Sports Talk periodically, when clam chowda love boils to the surface and can no longer be contained.
With the 1980 Topps baseball, centering kept them out of PSA 10 holders and the Henderson 8's seem to have fish eyes in the team banners along with the left card having ever so slight chipping on the bottom edge? Am I seeing that right?
I've graded a ton of 1980 Topps and from experience, cards like that need to be nearly perfect both front and back in order to attain high grades. I got tired of it and stopped subbing them and just buy cards already graded now as it saves a ton of money.
Edited to say that a Ryan 9 is nothing to be upset over, that's a very tough card...and the Molly looks to be a blazer...Centering is on point with that. Maybe a few print defects?
I'd take a Rickey
