Neat Find In Old Change Bag

segojasegoja Posts: 6,136 ✭✭✭✭

No Pics, but

A friends aunt died and she had the little sandwich bag of wheat cents , worn out V 5c, a few buffalo nickels with no dates, and worn out 1964 dime, a slick 1899 25c...the typical bag of old change that you see all the time.

I dumped it out and among the dreck, was a dirty 1908 $ 2 1/2 Indian....XF but certainly a neat find in a bag of nothing.

Wow, I wonder if she was this poor eyesighted old lady who thought it was just another dirty Lincoln cent?

Maybe she stuck it in there figuring no one would bother looking for a coin like that in a bag of old pocket change.

I love stories like this. Did you tell your friend "Don't clean that dirty gold coin. You will destroy its value if you don't do it right." Suggest that you offer to soak it in acetone or dip it for him. A pic would be nice.

That is a great find.... and I certainly agree that those surprises are the best. I just found a 2016DDR in change that was in my carry on from my last flight .... Yippeee.... Cheers, RickO

A lot better than finding an old 2 dollar bill IMO.

Depending on the appearance, if it's "good" dirt and doesn't need anything done to it (no pvc or gunk) -- in my experience, putting coins like that in a 2x2 mylar flip or even cardboard, stapled shut carefully and flattened, and labeled as to what it is, it will generally stay in that holder, and not be removed to see "what if we just polish this up a bit" and the like. Thus preventing the coin from suffering well-meaning but irreversible damage! :)
