16 out of 20 for the first page was great but it went downhill after that

Had an appointment in Bedminster last Thursday to have 20 coins evaluated by Cac and to save on postage brought 120 coins. This 120 is a large part of my early type coins that had yet to be reviewed by Cac.

Plan was 20 to be done that day and 100 to leave to go through their regular service.

Due to the high insurance costs on the first 2 boxes they offered to have another 20 done by Friday early afternoon. Being on the road since 7 am and with the option of getting an earlier start on Friday is was an easy choice. Besides the savings easily paid for the hotel and dinner.

Picked up the 40 on Friday and on the first page was quite happy to see that 16 had passed! Second page however was a different story with only 5 passing. However of the five, my $20 lib. 1850-O in Pcgs Au 53 received a Gold sticker.

Thursday of this week got results of the last 4 shipments, 2 boxes of twenty have 9 that passed and two boxes of 8 passing. Of the 34 that passed 3 were gold, $5 1834 in 63, $5 1835 in 53, and 1853 H10c in 63

Playing with numbers

21 of 50 gold coins= 42%
3 of 50= 6%

Net result was 55 out of 118 ( 2 of the first 40 were errors that Cac doesn't consider) 46.6% and as for gold stickers 4/118 is 3.3%

Not really that disappointed but the first page of 16/20 was such a great start that 5 on the second box cast a dark cloud

Seems like I remember seeing 40% pass rate was average

BTW can't say enough positive about the people at Cac and it's obvious it's a very well run company. Wish stock existed on the company.

Since you didn't screen 100% of the coins you submitted, I think it shows you have a great eye overall, especially for all that gold you have share with us previously (you should link your $20 collection). I would think the majority of submitters (dealers) screen the coins they send in and they still don't have the results you got here...

First of all, you have a truly impressive collection. The 1834 half eagle looks outstanding. And the 1838 quarter.
CAC is particularly tough on gold so I think you did really well. John Albanese is known for his expertise in gold. I hope you had the chance to talk about a few of the examples with him or Bill Shamhart. One of the best things about going there in person is the opportunity to soak in some knowledge.
    Thanks for sharing your experience.

Great looking collection! Love the gold on the Continental dollar. Congrats on the results.

I think your results are good. Did very well on the gold, and now if you sit back and look at the coins as a whole, you might be able to identify trends in the passed vs no passed and use the knowledge when making future purchases.

Your photos might be "horrible," but your coins are wonderful!

panexpoguy..... I have to agree that there lessons to be learned from the results. Basically grabbing all my early type coins to bring I knew many that would not pass such as this 1838

I knew the coin had been dipped in its past (also the case with the 1795 half eagle) but as Bill Jones stated some of the rare issues show up so infrequently you have to jump on it when it comes up.

Having said that there were several coins that failed that really surprised me .

I should have been smarter and tried to speak to JA or Bill as "breakdown" suggested but I may have been in too much in a hurry at 1:30 Friday with a 4 hr drive to hit the road. I started looking at the 2 sheets (other 4 boxes with 80 coin I've yet to receive) as I walked out in the hallway.

One such surprise (failed) was this slug that I felt had great color and original skin....or so I thought and may have been the lesson of the day
