Coin World Article: How the Mint makes 3-inch-wide dies

Coin World has a cool article on how the mint prepares the dies for the 5oz ATB pucks...
No hubs, the dies are individually machined. A collector version dies are used for 5-8K coins, the dies for the bullion version are good for 12K coins. Each are struck 3 times, with the force dependent upon the details in the design.

CCAC members observed this process while the new press was in trial production several years ago. It took a lot of experimentation to attain the present quality for these 3-inch silver products.
Glad they also mentioned the 3 inch medals in this article...
Yeah, they've been putting out some very nice bronze medals lately. The three inchers weigh in at 250g. (8.8 oz.) That's heavier than a hockey puck. Here's my Doolittle from an old thread. (New forum makes it so easy to find one of your old threads. )
