Friend told me how his elder dad almost cashed in silver for face
Just heard from a friend this week, who was telling his friends on FB about a recent incident (he didn't know until later that my hobby is numismatics) , that his father took a bunch of old silver dollars (literally.....morgans and peace) and silver quarters to a local Chase back to cash in for face value.
The dad is still functioning but, apparently, isn't as sharp as he used to be and was ignorant of the silver. His wife had put it all away when she worked, years ago, as a bank teller. She passed away, so it is just him and his son when he visits.
They exchanged the coins for bills at face value but, when the son found out, he called and they put the coins aside so they could be re-swapped the following day.
I can imagine a teller, if they knew what was there, was pretty crestfallen, but the family is quite happy that Chase didn't just blow them off and was able to secure the coins and re-exchange them for the father the next day.
So, there will be those that will say "oh well. it was a done deal" and possibly side with the bank. And, they wouldn't be wrong. However, I am grateful for my friend, and his dad, that Chase actually was able, and willing, to "roll back the clock" a day for this and correct it for them.
The family isn't rich, so every little bit helps. Being unknowledgeable shouldn't mean always losing out, imo.
When I read the story, I reached out to my friend and offered to look at the items and give him ideas on the values and let him decide what to do (ie...sell so his father has the money, or hold if selling isn't necessary). I made no offer to purchase, just to let my friend know what his father actually has.
My friend said there is actually a lot of coins. The silver coins and then proof sets from the 70s (obviously, not going to be worth much) and other things. He is going to try to find time to inventory and let me know.
Nothing may come out of it, but I hope, for his father's sake, he has something pretty nice there that he will be able to sell and get some real money from.

Unfortunately as the population that accumulated gold and silver for wealth preservation is growing old and may not be making the best discussions. Good work Bochiman. I believe we all owe it to our elders to help them as they age. It's not always easy, but it is the right thing to do. Thank you for posting.
