Finally learning

Over time I have learned much about how to build my collection and how not to. A recent purchase reinforced one lesson I have learned. Certain dates are hard to come by in my series I collect and when one does come around in the past I would tend to want to purchase despite concerns about price or quality. Of course that makes no sense but one can trick one into thinking that they may not have another opportunity. Over time I have learned patience and that usually is rewarded.
For instance, there was a date that I really wanted and a year ago or so saw the coin in a dealer's inventory. The price was not crazy but the coin's image was very unattractive. The gold coin did not look natural and the marks were distracting. The problem was that it seemed that there wasn't much of an option for this hard to find date. However, I waited and put my money aside until I found something more appealing. In the last couple weeks I got a call from a dealer who not only had the date but the coin was in the same grade and stickered (the highest graded coin stickered by CAC). The price was lower than the unattractive coin as well. This coin was fresh (6 months ago it did not show up on the PCGS pop reports or CAC reports). I took about 5 minutes to decide and purchased it.
So happy that I did not succumb and settle for the first more unattractive and more expensive coin.

Patience is a virtue. I too have learned to be selective. Congrats on the gold.
I too have learned the hard way...and also that a sticker is no guarantee of a coin's originality...don't be afraid to ask the dealer some tough questions...and don't be forced into anything....it's been said here a million times...get a network of dealers that you can trust!!!
Patience is indeed a virtue. Well done! I hope you'll post pictures when it arrives.![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)

It can be very hard to wait for the right coin. Your example is an excellent one.

Lol. Hope to have coin in hand in the next couple days
Great story.... and many of us went through that transition.... seems it is a part of hobby maturation. Cheers, RickO
It can be very hard to learn to wait for better to come along. In my collection still, there are pieces that ought to be pruned for better. Congrats on your find!
