Folks ,
Just got wind of a large collection that was stolen approx. 2 weeks ago- Fayetteville/ Raleigh NC area.
Background: I had looked at a lot of this collection a few years ago, and was thinking how nice it was and how much I would have loved to have bough it, but owner inherited it from his dad, and didn't want to sell anything at the time.
He called today and asked if I had seen or herd anything, was pure sick to my stomach when I herd!
Its been a couple years, but going by memory:
Complete set of large cents from 1794 thru 1857 inc vg 1799 vg 1804 and several really nice assorted dates thru the teens and forward. Set of early bust halves (nice XF-AU) from 1809 thru 1830's If I recall , these were in wayte Raymond boards.
complete set of two cent pieces in capitol frame, most were avg circ, but had a really nice 1873 proof and 1864 sm.
Complete set of morgans Vg-AU, complete gold type set in capitol frame.
I know just about everyone here (and most call or contact me if a big deal comes in), and have a near photographic memory when it comes to coins, so I would have known if it showed up in this area, which it has not. It obviously went out of this area : being two weeks now, I know the owner has 0% percent chance of recovering anything, but thought I would post it here just in case.
Apparently it was not secured. I just don't understand why folks keep collections of this magnitude open and not secured.
A few months ago a large collection over 100k was stolen out of Lumberton, nc , and people had went out of town and left the collection in a bedroom closet. Earlier this year, guy left 30k worth of gold coins in a bedroom dresser drawer to find them stolen by an employee.

Wow - sad to hear - hope it turns up....sounds like his dad had spent his life assembling it!
Sad to hear, sounds like one very nice collection.

Man I hate to hear things like this. Have you contacted Doug Davis of NCIC about it yet so it can get out to the dealer network?
Wow... lots of money, for sure... but also all that time, effort, and energy. I hope he gets it back!

Very sad. When I was a kid, our house was robbed and they took my dads coin collection. They found coins littered throughout the back yard, over a fence and down the street as the crooks ran away from the scene. My mom and I were the first ones at the house after it happened. It's not a good feeling. Keep your coins and your family safe.
Were they all raw? If so they will be much more difficult to identify. My guess is most crooks wouldn't crack the coins out of holders.
Horse has left the barn in this case -- but you don't keep collections of that nature at home.
Wow that's sad news

Very sad... for both the numismatic and personal value....security is prime for valuable collections, and layered security is advised. If one chooses not to invest/indulge personally, then there is always the SDB....although a poor second choice (IMO) it is far better than suffering the loss. Cheers, RickO
Bump.
Sorry to hear this. I'll be on the lookout, I'm only a few hours away and work at a B&M.
