1798 Dime with problems

Be on the lookout !! 1798 Dime on Ebay from Indycoindealer. It has a repair. Look in the stars on the reverse and it corresponds to a patch on the obverse.....Plugged ?? I asked about it before buying.....it's going back!!

Might it have been a cracked planchet that was repaired?

I see what you're seeing, but it just looks like an area of poor strike and subsequent wear to me. Might look otherwise in-hand.

That said, this is a coin I'd rather buy in a slab unless deeply discounted. Easier to avoid problems that way!

I could imagine a repair if it was a 1798/7 but I think what you have here is a irregular planchet to start with, perhaps damaged during circulation, but I do not see the presence of a defined plug. It's just easier to return it if your not satisfied.

Note: If that so-called silver plug (or plugs) you see were added by the Philadelphia Mint...bonus time!

I'd bet if you had an overlay created of that coin, your allegation would be disproved easily.

  • What do you mean by an overlay ? The stars on the reverse show something has beed abraided there and on the obverse in the same spot its abraided....a faint circle can been seen on the obverse.

I see it, the area at the shoulder, not the planchet flaws/lamination in front of the face.

  • Correct...it corresponds to the same area scuffed up on the reverse....and has a faint circle around it...under a glass the scuffing is in a circle as well....the coin is flat but has a wavy like disturbance there too.

I have to agree that this coin has been repaired. Looking at sales of other coins that have the late die state, the stars do not look the same. In fact, the star repairs are rather crude. The crude stars coupled with what appears to be a plug in the same place on the obverse makes me agree with SoundBSR.

The smaller scale of the obverse image made it difficult to see any unusual detail on the obverse on my monitor, where you have now pointed out as corresponding to the disturbance on the reverse. It would have been more effective and meaningful if you presented same scale images for both obverse and reverse.

This 1798 JR-4 has been holed, plugged, and reverse star re-engraved. The star above the eagle's beak has points that don't match the rotation alignment of JR-4's that have not been altered. Compare with the JR-4's in Heritage archives, or the EUSD book. The obverse die cracks are correct for the variety.

  • Thanks everybody !!! It is being returned and the denial of damage by Indycoindealer has been duly noted in my mind !!
