An 1884 Gold Dollar
Here is another of my Baltimore purchases, an 1884 gold dollar. This is part set of gold dollars from the 1880s that I am gradually building. These coins are noted for low mintages, high survival rates, high grades among the survivors and often Proof-Like surfaces. Many of these coins were used for jewelry during this period and according to some sources the low mintages prompted some people to hoard them for speculative purposes.
The 1884 has proven to be among the more difficult dates for me to find properly graded. One piece, graded MS-65 in an old rattle holder, upon which I placed bids, sold for almost $5,000 against a "Coin Facts" quote of $1,750! That price was higher than the Coin Facts estimate for an MS-67. I was out on that one thousands of dollars before that.
This piece is an MS-63, but it looks betterwhen viewed with the naked eye. It is P-L and usually marks show off markedly on such surfaces, but they don't look at all bad on this piece. The worst mark is a pit to the left of the big "1" on the reverse. That is a tiny planchet defect, not a scrach or dig.
The dealer's asking price on this piece was higher than the Coin Facts number, but when I reviewed the recent auction results, they were all higher than the Coin Facts quote and higher than his asking price. Therefore I concluded that this date is perhaps a little underrated.

Nice.
Very nice looking 1884 G$1 Bill. The one in my set is a 63 also. These are a bit tougher to find, especially in grades under 65. Like several of the 80's dates they go a good bit above guidebook price.
