New Kennedy 1972-D variety?
Most of you may be familiar with the 1972-D no “FG” variety Kennedy half. This variety lacks Frank Gasparro’s initials located on the reverse, between the eagles left leg and base of tail feathers. An important indicator for this variety is the stars located at the 5 o’clock position which are weak.
This is a variety I look for while searching haves as they are quite scarce. I haven’t found a 1972-D no “FG” variety out of the roughly 14,000 halves I’ve searched the past three months; but I did find an interesting cousin: Maybe. I have found two 1972-D’s that lack the “F” and have a faint outline of the “G.” Both pieces have the same large die break / gouge above the “F” in Half extending to above the “D” in Dollar. They both have the same break / gouge between the “D” and “O” in dollar.
Below are both specimens. What do you think- would this qualify as a new variety, should I send out for confirmation Monday?
Thanks,
Rich

Not sure this would make a new variety seems it is just a early state of the current one to me.
BTW PCGS does not assign varities Cheery Pickers does.
Oh boy.... now I have to check out my Kennedy halves.....never looked for this... Cheers, RickO
Possibly ...................whats going on with the F in half and the D in Dollar........is that a die break or a scratch ??

Nice find! I too have a SMS Kennedy from 1966 that has the "FG" hardly showing, almost gone (referring to the famous, "No FG" 1966 SMS), liken unto your '72D. I see no recognition for mine but I wish you luck on yours.

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line. The mark between "F" and "D" is likely a die clash. I don't know of any reference that would consider it a listable variety. And most people that collect Kennedy halves by variety don't really collect die clashes. There are many more, much more dramatic examples of die clashes on Kennedy Halves that aren't listed and aren't actively collected.
I'm guessing that the explanation assigned to this example will be that the Mint was trying to remove the die clash, and as a result erased some of the details, including the "F" in "FG".
You're right- that is a die clash. I couldn't decide whether a gouge, or, break, and didn't consider a die clash. The clash appears to be from the obverse of the top of Kennedy's head from the last tuft of hair past the "B" in Liberty, just past the "E."
Thanks all- Rich
Some sellers who find the examples shown list them as 'Weak FG' attempting to make something out of nothing. For it to qualify, the FG must be gone, period.
